Bossa Nova is a music genre that originated in Brazil and gained worldwide popularity in the 60’s, through the music of genius composers such as Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. With roots in the Samba, Bossa Nova uses less percussive elements and is heavily influenced by jazz music. It is well known for its sweet, summery melodies and smooth tone.
This Alpha Productions release, Mysterious Morning, is the first full-length disc by the Quatuor Habanera, a French saxophone quartet founded in 1993 and dedicated to the exploration of the ever-expanding universe of music being created for this instrumental combination. The main event for many listeners will be the inclusion of a late Iannis Xenakis work, Xas (1987).
To date, Kalevi Aho has composed sixteen symphonies and twenty-eight concertos, several operas and a large number of chamber works – a rate of production which is all the more impressive considering the complexity and originality displayed by each new work.
