Sometimes even a legend just wants to have fun. Having gradually achieved his lofty position as a titan of British folk-rock and as one of Britain's finest songwriters, Richard Thompson allows his instincts as a sublime guitarist to dominate this casually brilliant double album.

Folk artist Richard Thompson released this nostalgia-themed album in 1999, hearkening back to the sounds of England's 1960s rock. For this, his fifth album for Capitol, Thompson teamed up with producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, and Mock Tudor had a more straightforward production than his preceding albums on Capitol which had been produced by Mitchell Froom. In this album Thompson draws predominantly on the musical styles of 1960s England—the time and place of his youth. The lyrics have a nostalgic tinge and are rich with allusion to fairy tales and children's books as well as to Shakespeare and T. S. Eliot.

1991's Rumor and Sigh was among Richard Thompson's best-selling and most warmly received albums, even gaining a bit of radio and MTV exposure which introduced Thompson to a wider audience than ever before. But while Thompson has often expressed his desire to reach a greater number of listeners, he's (thankfully) unwilling to dumb his music down, and it's probably no coincidence that he followed up his most user-friendly album with the more difficult Mirror Blue.

Released in 1988, Amnesia is the second album Richard Thompson recorded in Los Angeles with producer and keyboardist Mitchell Froom.
