The world's first lullabies were simple songs sung or hummed by parents cradling their infants and rocking them to sleep. After the birth of violinist Rachel Barton Pine's first child in 2011 she could find no existing collection of classical violin lullaby scores or recordings, so she set about gathering sheet music from libraries around the world and recording her own versions with pianist Matthew Hagle. Familiar tunes and new discoveries intertwine in this sweet, timely release celebrating the beauty of new life and parenthood.

Here’s a strange and interesting CD if I’ve ever heard one. It begins with Peter Eötvös’s contemporary piece Levitation, written for two clarinets, accordion, and strings. But don’t break out your polka records for a comparison; this music is more of the style normally described as “contemporary ambient,” with brief shards of musical motifs drifting, interacting, and creating a mood rather than a work with a form that one can grasp. Ironically, I find it much more palatable than some of the contemporary music I’ve reviewed recently, such as Maxwell Davies’s Symphony No. 1 or the piano music of Judith Lang Zaimont. The first section depicts a hurricane scene in which phone boxes and traffic signs float on the violent winds, yet the music is not as violent as the description suggests. Its fragmentary nature, and reliance on a small group of instruments, results in an atonal yet somehow fascinating musical environment.

Death/Doom Metal

Aphotic is quite possibly the most unique Novembers Doom release yet. The album has its roots in darkness and melancholic madness, reminiscent of the band’s early doom roots but bringing something new and modern to the listener. Aphotic features special guests on several tracks. Anneke Van Giersbergen (The Gathering) delivers chilling and haunting vocals, violinist Rachel Barton Pine (Earthen Grave) lends her talents and finally, the man behind the mixing board Dan Swano (Nightingale, Edge of Sanity, Bloodbath) adds his vocal touch offering a rare appearance of his mighty growl.

Two rarely recorded Haydn violin concertos frame Rachel Podger’s performance of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E flat on this disc. Both concertos have only string accompaniment, here provided by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and a discreet harpsichord (the player’s name unaccountably omitted from the list of the orchestra personnel in the accompanying booklet). Rachel Podger has chosen to play both concertos on her own Pesarinius violin (1739) that she feels is most suited to the style of these works and few would disagree with her choice. Her agile and spirited playing in the outer movements is complemented by her pure cantilena in the slow movements. As is to be expected, both works are full of baroque idioms and, while neither presents Haydn at his most inventive, they make an enjoyable pairing.
