Although Finland's extraordinary Jean Sibelius may be foremost among Nordic composers, his contemporary, Carl Nielsen – best known for six highly original symphonies and simple popular songs – holds an honored place as Denmark's foremost post-Romantic musical ambassador, and has found considerable acclaim amongst musicians and audiences alike. A painter by profession, Nielsen's father spent as much or more energy on his secondary activities as a violinist, and it was in this way that young Carl received his first musical instruction. At 14 Carl auditioned for a position with a military wind ensemble at Odense (he was hired as a bugler, despite his lack of formal training on the instrument). During a visit to Copenhagen ……….

EAC | FLAC (tracks+.cue, log) | Covers Included | 73:47 | 569 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: BIS | Catalog: 1659

Announced as Volume 1, this BIS release launches a new cycle of Wilhelm Stenhammar’s works for string quartet, which are six in numbered ones, plus an unnumbered one in F Minor which comes chronologically between Nos. 3 and 4, but which the composer withdrew. Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871–1927) is one of those very late Scandinavian Romantics in this case, a Swede who I’ve described before as setting with the midnight sun.

Though written barely 20 years apart, Dvorák's Cello Concerto and Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations draw their inspiration from two entirely different epochs. Dvorák's lush, Romantic concerto has hints of Czech motherland and even adaptations of his own previous works. The accompaniment is densely scored with tutti sections that could easily be right out of one of his symphonies.

A prestigious project: the recording of the complete string quartets of Franz Schubert, by the German Diogenes Quartet. Volume 1 offers one masterpiece, the famous Rosamunde Quartet in A minor, and the early quartet in D major D94. Schubert’s String Quartets count among the most frequently performed quartets of the repertoire (only rivalled by Beethoven). These works express Schubert’s superb gift as a melodist within the classical structure of a string quartet, unique creations of romantic content and classical form.

In terms of the scale of his compositions, John Adams' career is somewhat anomalous for a contemporary composer. While the usual pattern tends to be for a composer to begin a career writing smaller pieces (which have a far likelier chance of being performed) and then expanding to larger forms as his or her reputation grows, Adams (with very few exceptions) was writing large-scale operas and orchestral and choral works starting in the early '80s and didn't begin devoting himself to chamber music with any regularity until the mid-'90s.

Joseph Schuster (1748-1812), born in Dresden, was best known in his day for his church music and operas. These six quartets date from 1780. They are commissioned by the Marquis Giuseppe Ximenes, a keen amateur violinist living in Padua, who had earlier given the young Mozart the commission for his oratorio La Betulia Liberata.

Beethoven's String Quartets are well known for their inventiveness. The mold of the string quartet form, established by Haydn, was shattered by Beethoven's profound expression and expansion of the "rules." Between 1999 and 2003, the renowned Pražák Quartet recorded all of the Beethoven string quartets, and this match of program and performers is one made in heaven.
