Although Finland's extraordinary Jean Sibelius may be foremost among Nordic composers, his contemporary, Carl Nielsen – best known for six highly original symphonies and simple popular songs – holds an honored place as Denmark's foremost post-Romantic musical ambassador, and has found considerable acclaim amongst musicians and audiences alike. A painter by profession, Nielsen's father spent as much or more energy on his secondary activities as a violinist, and it was in this way that young Carl received his first musical instruction. At 14 Carl auditioned for a position with a military wind ensemble at Odense (he was hired as a bugler, despite his lack of formal training on the instrument). During a visit to Copenhagen ……….

Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871–1927) is one of those very late Scandinavian Romantics in this case, a Swede who I’ve described before as setting with the midnight sun.

Leader of the European modernity early XXth century, Karol Szymanowski is still quite ignored today. A certain esotericism emanates from the music and of the artistic personality of this grand Polish lord. His fickleness and his language evolving with his influences : Strauss, Debussy, Scriabine in particular, could have been intimidating. And yet, there is hardly any music more immediately recognizable than Szymanowski’s,especially if you concentrate on his major and most significant works. One of his most identifiable « signatures » will be, for example, this « voice » of the violin, in the mysterious and upper register, sensual and immaterial at the same time, like the song of a heavenly mermaid…

Acclaimed for their ravishingly beautiful tone as well as their extraordinary technical skills and musicianship, the members of the New Orford String Quartet (NOSQ) delve into works by three Canadian composers: Francois Dompierre (Par quatre chemins), Airat Ichmouratov (String Quartet No. 4, Op. 35), and Tim Brady (Journal / String Quartet No. 2). The quartet by Francois Dompierre was commissioned by Jean-Francois Rivest when he was artistic director of the Orford Arts Centre. Its title, Par quatre chemins, is a reference to the famous radio show with the same name, hosted by a great communicator, Jacques Languirand.

This recording presents an unusual pairing of the complete string quartets by Szymanowski and Debussy. Szymanowksi is one of Poland’s most famous composers. Influences on his style are many (Bartók’s percussive and motoric drive, Ravel’s coloristic sonorities) but he found his own personal language, lush, opulent, rich and sometimes exotic, always expressing a deep emotional content. Debussy’s string quartet dates from his early years, a beautiful and romantic work, the French answer to Wagner’s richly chromatic language.

Not merely the atmosphere, but also the various references suggest that Weinbergs music including his String Quartets Nos. 8, 9 and 10 comes from the mind of someone who suffered because of the tragic fate of his family and missed the lost homeland where he had spent 'the best and happiest years' of his life, as he confessed many years later to an interlocutor from Poland. These three works Opp. 66, 80 and 85 were composed in a period when he lived off memories, which is also evident in his choice of texts for his vocal works.
