I came to a realization as I approached this review of Prophecies and Lies, the third album by North Carolina’s Demon Eye. I tend to navigate towards one of two directions when it comes to music. Either I grab onto something fresh, exciting, and genre-pushing, or I flock to well-worn sounds that are performed with such conviction, talent, and pizzazz that it makes me overlook that yes, I have heard this a million times before. Prophecies and Lies comfortably falls into the latter category, generating a sound that recalls the glory years of the 70s. But if you’re anything like me, first of all, clean your room, and second, you’re probably sick to death of bands aping the retro-doom sound making its rounds among the underground. The music’s gotta be something special for me to pay attention and give it my time.

For over a century the camera has been war's most efficient spy, keeping watch over the enemy, helping to predict enemy movements and guiding missiles to their targets. Now from its position in space camera has brought the earth and all its battlegrounds under constant and silent surveillance. But is the camera and its all-seeing eye a force for good or evil? How often has the information provided by the camera been misinterpreted, how often has it misled with deadly consequences?

Kimi Kärki - Eye For An Eye (2017)  Music

Kimi Kärki - Eye For An Eye (2017; 2017)
Folk | 00:47:42 | MP3, 320 kbps | 109,21 MB
Label: Svart Records

The second solo album from Kimi Kärki, Eye for an Eye, is abidingly sad — make no mistake — but ultimately it is defined by more than just its melancholy. Released through Svart Records, which also stood behind the Finland-based former Reverend Bizarre and current Lord Vicar (see also: Orne, E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr, Uhrijuhla, etc.) guitarist’s 2013 debut, The Bone of My Bones (review here), the also-cyclically-titled outing shares in common with its predecessor its heartfelt and folkish delivery, but steps further into an intimacy of songwriting and seems to bask in minimalism even as it expands Kärki‘s use of harmonized vocal arrangements, echoing spaciousness and synth on works like the centerpiece “Good Things in Life” and its finale.

With ties to IQ and Marillion - keyboardist Martin Orford and bassist John Jowitt are also members of IQ, and Marillion's Steve Rothery produced early Jadis demos - Jadis emerged with More Than Meets the Eye in spring 1992. It's full of flowing yet complex melodies and plenty of light and shade. With nontraditional song structures ("Hiding In One Corner") and long instrumental epics ("Holding Your Breath"), the album fits the neoprog mold of the time. But More Than Meets the Eye is actually more exciting to listen to than some of its peers from the period, thanks in large part to guitarist and vocalist Gary Chandler's crisp and friendly singing.
