"Decade" is a compilation by Neil Young, originally released in 1977 as a triple album. Decade was supposed to have been released in '76 but had been delayed. When it was finally released in late '77 I rushed to buy it and it was filled with great stuff for fans. Covering the years between 1966-1976, "Decade" is a solid overview that shows off the many sides of the always iconoclastic Neil Young. Starting with Young's work in Buffalo Springfield, some of the nuggets include the psychedelic calliope that is "Down To The Wire" and the fuzz guitar/Motown-inspired "Mr. Soul". Throughout these ten years of recordings, Young constantly dug deep, touching on controversial topics be it his CSN&Y masterpiece about the student massacre at Kent State ("Ohio"), compositions dealing with the ups and downs of the drug culture ("Needle And The Damage Done", "Tonight's The Night") or history's dark chapters of racial injustice ("Cortez The Killer", "Southern Man").

Given the quirkiness of Neil Young's recording career, with its frequent cancellations of releases and last-minute rearrangements of material, it is a relief to report that this two-disc compilation is so conventional and so satisfying. A 35-track selection of the best of Young's work between 1966 and 1976, it includes songs performed by Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the Stills-Young Band, as well as solo work.

This is an incredible collection of Neil Young's work. It includes several songs that were previously unreleased.

* "Down to the Wire" is an outtake from Buffalo Springfield Again. It features piano from Dr. John (Mac Rebennack).
* "Winterlong" was recorded during the On The Beach sessions.
* "Deep Forbidden Lake" is from the sessions for Homegrown, one of Neil's unreleased albums.
* "Love Is A Rose" is a song with the same melody as "Dance Dance Dance", a song by Neil given to Crazy Horse for their 1971 album. Linda Ronstadt later recorded "Love Is A Rose".
* "Campaigner" was written during the Stills-Young Band tour in 1976. Promo versions of Decade featured a version of "Campaigner" with a verse that was removed for the retail copies.

Decade also had several rarities…

The unreleased solo acoustic album recorded in 1976, which includes includes solo, acoustic songs recorded in 1976 at the Indigo Ranch Studios in Malibu, California and featuring 2 previously unreleased songs! Although Hitchhiker isn't Neil Young's first abandoned album to be unearthed later, it's certainly his most realized — impressive, given these songs were recorded quickly in a single session in 1976. Armed with only an acoustic guitar and harmonica (and a studio piano for "The Old Country Waltz"), Young left the studio that evening having recorded some of his strongest songs to date; he envisioned the lo-fi recording to be released as is before Reprise, his record label, flat-out objected.

This 1970 solo acoustic set at D.C.'s Cellar Door catches Neil Young in a bleak, hollow mood, rudely awoken from the hippie dream his audience still wants to believe. Amidst an accumulation of dark, druggy vibes, Live at the Cellar Door shows Young peeking over the edge of the 60s into the dark chasm of the next decade. “It’s about what happens when you start getting high, and you find out that people you thought you knew, you don’t know anymore, because they don’t get high and you do.”

Neil Young made a point of listing the recording dates of the songs on American Stars 'n Bars; the dates even appeared on the LP labels. They revealed that the songs had been cut at four different sessions dating back to 1974. But even without such documentation, it would have been easy to tell that the album was a stylistic hodgepodge, its first side consisting of country-tinged material featuring steel guitar and fiddle, plus backup vocals from Linda Ronstadt and the then-unknown Nicolette Larson, while the four songs on the second side varied from acoustic solo numbers like "Will to Love" to raging rockers such as "Like a Hurricane."

After the Buffalo Springfield imploded, Neil Young recorded his first, eponymous solo album, an elaborately overdubbed affair that cast him in the role of brooding singer-songwriter. But soon after that record was released, in January 1969, Young began jamming in Los Angeles with a band called the Rockets, redubbed Crazy Horse, and started a relationship that would change guitar rock forever and form the foundation of his career. If Neil Young had an aura of careful subtlety bordering on tentativeness, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere felt raw, rushed, energized. Indeed, Young dashed off the album’s three central songs — “Cinnamon Girl,” “Down by the River” and “Cowgirl in the Sand” — in a single fever-addled afternoon, and Young and the band play with an almost reckless disregard for prettiness, precision, clarity.
