It should come as no surprise that Gergiev is in his element in Prokofiev's symphonies. Whatever his failings in other repertory, he's always had a knack for visceral excitement in Russian music, sometimes at the expense of lyric or lighter moments. And so it is here. Gergiev is a bit heavy-handed in the popular Classical Symphony, Prokofiev's homage to Haydn and Mozart. But he delivers high-octane power in the three steel-age symphonies that follow (the set is especially notable for the inclusion of both versions of the Fourth).

Trevor Pinnock's set of Mozart symphonies, recorded between 1992 and early 1995, was greeted warmly upon its release in three separate volumes (the last volume typically never made it to U.S. shores as a domestic release) and Universal has seen fit to re-issue it in an 11-CD box as part of its Collectors Edition series. While the general public honed its "historically informed" ear on the pioneering compilation set by Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music in the mid-1980s, Pinnock's later account, the second such to use period instruments, showed just how much more refined and skillful period-instrument playing was to become.

Youngest son of J.S. Bach, Johann Christian Bach rose to prominence in England during the early Classical period much the same as his father dominated the German Baroque. His writing was influenced by his father, of course, but also by the fashions being explored by Haydn. J.C. Bach also served as a bridge to Mozart, whose work and early writings were also influenced by the junior Bach. A total of 15, three-movement symphonies were published under Opp. 6, 9, and 18. These works are filled with fresh, energetic optimism, the only exception being the stormy, tumultuous Symphony Op. 6/6 in G minor, the only one of the 15 to be written in the minor mode. Bach's choice of instruments varied, from symphonies using only strings to the addition of winds and ultimately to the grand "double orchestra" employed in Op. 18. This Newton disc is a two-disc reissue of David Zinman's early 1970s recordings of the complete symphonies with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra.

Recorded for Telarc between 1986 and 1990, Charles Mackerras and the Prague Chamber Orchestra's recordings of Mozart's complete symphonies have always been admired for their style, strength, and sensitivity. Reissued here in 2008 as a 10-disc set, those qualities are still obvious. Mackerras, surely one of the most versatile of contemporary conductors, clearly has a thoroughgoing understanding of Mozart's manner. From the first to the last symphonies (and this set contains not only the 40 numbered but also the 7 un-numbered symphonies), Mackerras stresses the score's elegance, wit, charm, and clarity. And the Prague Chamber Orchestra likewise wholly grasps Mozart's matter…

"You absolutely must hear him, this boy plays like a devil.” - Aribert Reimann to David Levine (1986, during his visit to Ankara) With his extraordinary pianistic talents, Turkish pianist Fazıl Say has been touching audiences and critics alike for more than twenty-five years, in a way that has become rare in the increasingly materialistic and elaborately organised classical music world.

The objective manner may disappoint those who remember Ashkenazy's more flamboyant pianism but this kind of plain-spoken Shostakovich could make a good benchmark library choice. The conscientious avoidance of either high gloss of interpretative point-scoring is carried over into the three new performances produced in-house by the NHK Symphony, an orchestra with which Ashkenazy has been associated as music director and latterly conductor laureate.
