After leaving Ukiah, CA, and moving south to San Francisco to form the Charles Ford Band (named for their father) in the late '60s with harmonica player Gary Smith, brothers Pat (drums) and Robben (guitar) were enlisted by Charlie Musselwhite and were pivotal members of one of the best aggregations the harpist ever led. Leaving Musselwhite after recording Arhoolie's Takin' My Time, they recruited bassist Stan Poplin and younger brother Mark, then age 17, on harmonica and played under the name the Real Charles Ford Band. Heavily influenced by the original Butterfield Blues Band and the Chess catalog, the quartet was famous for their live jazz explorations…

For years now I have been performing and recording with a number of different blues artists. During that time I began to get ideas of my own as to what I thought would make for a good modern blues band. As I produced more and more projects for Blue Rock'It and other labels, these ideas became clearer. Finaly, I decided that it was time to call together Ronnie,Mark, and Garth to help me develop my Ford Blues Band concept. With no rehearsals, in just a little over twenty hours, we had completed this project……

Of all of Robben Ford's albums, this is the one I keep coming back to. He's spread out in different directions since then, as any artist or musician with a nagging muse would do, and has done so wonderfully for the most part. If anyone ever wanted an encyclopedia (read: lesson) of blues-based electric guitar styles embedded in solid songsmanship and tunecraft, this CD is the one to reach for. The guitar playing on this album should set the standard by which all similar efforts are measured. It's solid, melodic, and it soars. The songs are wonderful, and don't wear thin after even years of repeated listening; the guitar playing is dynamic without ever descending into cheap or gratuitous virtuosity, although RF can let it rip as well as anyone when it suits the movement of the music and the spirit of the moment. The solos are both blazingly and subtly alive, amazingly well-constructed, their notes and melody lines seldom predictable yet honoring tradition and never contrived, and I could go on and on … This CD offers a good opportunity to get grabbed.

This album is very entertaining and joyful. It is a splendid sweet blues, fast blues, tender blues album. The line up is stellar Robben, Colaiuta, Ferrante and Roscoe Beck plus some guests for the horn parts. They all together deliver a blues based music that is a joy to hear. There's not a single weak tune in the entire album and Robben plays his trademark blues-fusion licks with phenomenal taste and wonderful time and sound. Robben sings very very well too. He has a polite and clean voice… he sings great no doubt about it. The production is very clean too, maybe a little too much, but in the end it is good to hear a very well recorded album sometimes. In the end this is absolutly a musthave for any guitar enthusiast or blues lover. No better, it is a fantastic album a musthave for everyone who has musical taste.

Mark Henning bails out of the world of club music with this joyous exploration of one of his favourite genres: that rich world of vintage sci-fi and horror movie soundtracks that everybody loves these days. No Origin is a fourteen track trip through the spacey sounds that Mark hears in his head: sounds good in there.
