Mainstream Jazz | Country: Australia | Label: James Morrison

ABC Jazz is proud to present the final album from one of Australia’s greatest musicians, Don Burrows, playing with his finest pupil, the legendary James Morrison. In Good Company – released here for the first time – documents an afternoon in the studio with Don and James, and represents a golden opportunity to witness these two brilliant musicians ‘jamming together’. In typically virtuosic style, they each play three instruments (Don on alto flute, clarinet and alto saxophone, James on trombone, bass trumpet and trumpet), accompanied by Phil Stack on acoustic bass. The recording showcases the intimacy of their duet, and the musical wit and invention that has seen them become two of the world’s most celebrated musicians over the past decades.

The Letters Live was a series of audio compact discs released in coordination with Penthouse Forum magazine. It is the early 90's equivalent of old flexi-discs one could find in Velvet Talks magazine, where you would listen to the sexy talk. The Letters Live is similar to Lisa Palac's Cyborgasm CD series, but not as effective as what Palac did. There were seven volumes of The Letters Live, meant to be the audio version of Penthouse Forum, but I only have Volume Six. This was released by The Experience Entertainment Company, also known as eXpent audio. Enjoy… with pleasure.

The late J. Kirby Risk II called himself “a small-town businessman from the banks of the Wabash.” He was much more. The fastidious, dapper man from Lafayette, Indiana, exuded philanthropy and free enterprise. Like a sheepdog, he tended the flock, rounded up strays, darted to key places to close up stragglers, and nudged everyone toward a common goal.

For Victor Julien-Laferrière, the Centre for Fine Arts is synonymous with celebration! On the 3rd of June, the young French cellist won first prize at the very first Queen Elizabeth Competition for cello. He wowed the jury with his technique, which demonstrated staggering precision, accuracy and subjectivity, both during the prescribed work and in Shostakovich's First Concerto. The young award winner is back at BOZAR, this time in the company of Jonas Vitaud, a pianist lauded by the BBC Music Magazine for the "beauty of his phrasing".

Blues Rock | Label: UMC (Universal Music Catalogue)

Guitarist Gallagher's third officially released live album (during his lifetime) captures him on a grinding world tour in 1979 and 1980, pumping out blues-rockers with requisite aggression, yet none of the charm and subtlety that made his previous concert recordings so essential. The song selection is weak as it concentrates on lesser tracks from his late-'70s collections, but more problematically, the Irishman sounds like he's rushing the tunes and generally playing too loud. The arrangements bludgeon the songs behind a Wall of Sound, as Rory spits, rather than sings the lyrics, shouting above the crashing fray.
