Isabelle Faust has gone back to the original manuscript sources to offer us her versions of these iconic masterpieces of the violin repertoire. In Bach s time, music for solo instruments was still little explored territory, and his Sonatas and Partitas immediately established themselves as a benchmark, technically challenging and brimming with creativity.

Schubert wrote relatively little for the combination of piano and violin, but his output displays an astonishing variety of form and even ambition. The Sonata in A major op. posth. 162 of 1817 was the last of his contributions to what one might call ‘domestic music-making’. Ten years later, coming after the ‘Rosamunde’ and ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartets, the Rondo op.70 is an amazingly vital ‘rondo brillant’, while the Fantasy in in C major emerges as a model of lightweight cheerfulness. Disconcerting simplicity on the very edge of the abyss…

With this superlative 1999 recording by violinist Isabelle van Keulen with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Thomas Dausgaard, the Swedish modernist Allan Pettersson's late Second Violin Concerto receives its first digital recording. The only previous recording on Capriccio from 1980 had been performed by the forces that gave the work its premiere early that year, violinist Ida Haendel with the Swedish Radio Symphony under Herbert Blomstedt, and it stood inviolate for almost 20 years until the arrival of this disc.

The five most brilliant concertos for violin, all penned before the age of 19! Mozart was not even 15 years old when he began composing violin concertos that would serve as a backdrop at Salzburg receptions. An insatiable drive for independence would however lead the young Konzertmeister to overtly challenge musical forms, innovate with genres, humour and frivolity, all of which can be heard in this delightful first collaboration between Isabelle Faust and the musicians of Il Giardino Armonico.

None of these reconstructions are included in Teldec’s Bach 2000, although the better-known ‘originals’ obviously are. The real newcomer is the Sinfonia, BWV1045 (5'34'') ‘to an unknown cantata’ which – as befits a BWV number that immediately precedes the First Brandenburg Concerto – is rumbustious, festive and thematically likeable. Time and again I could sense allusions to other Bach instrumental pieces, though the soloist’s ceaseless arpeggiating is sometimes a distraction. We’re told it’s authentic (the manuscript source suggests a violin concerto in the making) but something about its harmonic language doesn’t quite ring true, though that reaction might well be due to lack of familiarity.

What is more legitimate than the fourth centenary of Shakespeare's death in 1616, is an album of melodies whose texts or subjects are taken from the inexhaustible treasure chest that is the work of the Stratford bard: Of legend - Ophelia, Desdemona, Shylock -, famous tirades, without forgetting his unforgettable sonnets, for four centuries that composers seize them with eagerness. The mezzo Isabelle Druet and her pianist Anne Le Bozec have chosen a few great hits (Schubert, Fauré, Schumann, Brahms, Sibelius), but also several works by musicians less often tackled such as Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Korngold or Gurney whose production Is far, far from being negligible. Druet plays with her magnificent vocal range ranging from murmuring to explosion, from joy to despair, all in several languages of which she seems to master the pronunciations with great agility.
