Joe Harriott's music goes virtually unheard today, yet the alto saxophonist exerted a powerful influence on early free jazz in England. The Jamaican-born and raised Harriott played with his countrymen, trumpeter Dizzy Reece and tenor saxophonist Wilton "Bogey" Gaynair, before emigrating to England in 1951. In London, Harriott worked freelance and in the band of trumpeter Pete Pitterson. In 1954, he landed an important gig with drummer Tony Kinsey; the next year he played in saxophonist Ronnie Scott's big band.

An incredible amount of work from British pianist/bandleader/arranger Harry South – one of the most important large group talents of the late 50s, and an artist who helped shepherd British jazz through a range of stylistic periods – from straight big band of the postwar years, to mod moments in the 60s, to even some sound library-styled work near the end of this set!

The best Jamaican musicians brought a substantial and masterful contribution to jazz. Their belated recognition reveals truly original, sophisticated styles. At long last the rare, little known albeit greatest recordings of Jamaican Jazz are gathered here, across 3CDs. They include strong personalities such as Wilton Gaynair, Cecil Lloyd, Billy Cooke, the ground-breaking Rastafarian Afro-Jazz of Count Ossie s Drum Orchestra, the distinctive guitar of Ernest Ranglin, as well as legendary names Joe Harriott, Harold McNair, Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook, Don Drummond and Rico Rodriguez. These musicians, who were shortly to be instrumental in ushering in the Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae eras, breathe energy and life into Swing, Mento, Hard Bop and Soul-Jazz.

Joe Simon established himself as a poignant, folksy, yet urgent vocalist with his debut album on the Sound Stage label. He was then working with the great disc jockey John "R" Richbourg, who helped him find the right blend of soulful ardor and countrified narrative. While neither "Teenager's Prayer" nor "Nine Pound Steel" hit the charts, they laid the groundwork for Simon's monster hits that followed two years later. This album has long been deleted; look for it on collector's auction lists or in used record stores.

Joe Beck has had a long career, though he remains an artist deserving of wider recognition. These 2005 sessions are a relaxing affair that will delight fans of Brazilian jazz. Joined by bassist Ira Coleman and drummer Thierry Arpino (who is known for his work with violinist Jean-Luc Ponty), Beck's fluid electric guitar (while sometimes overdubbing an acoustic rhythm line) makes the most of each selection, playing a heavy dose of popular tunes by Antonio Carlos Jobim and his own tasty originals. Highlights among the Jobim compositions include the bittersweet "O Grande Amor" and the easygoing "Felicidade." Harmonica player Gregoire Maret is added for the leader's gentle bossa nova "And Here's to You" and Jobim's bittersweet "Falando De Amor."

Ella Fitzgerald and guitarist Joe Pass teamed up in a set of duets for this album which has been reissued on CD. Because the emphasis is on ballads and not all of the songs are that well suited to Fitzgerald's musical personality (particularly "Lush Life" and "I Want to Talk About You"), this set is only a mixed success. Much more successful are "Don't Be That Way" and "A Foggy Day" but this is not one of the more essential Ella Fitzgerald records.
