In the pantheon of classic live albums, Joe Cocker's 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen' is near the top, alongside 'Woodstock' and 'The Last Waltz' in defining the spirit of a generation. Now, the album – originally issued in 1970 – is heard with previously unreleased tracks and studio cuts. The 35th Anniversary Deluxe Edition reveals in full for the first time, the repertoire of the craziest, loudest, longest rock 'n' roll circus to have ever hit America, featuring guests such as Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, and Don Preston.

The rock & roll road show never really caught on, which is surprising given that Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen revue showed tour dogs how it's done. Recorded live at New York's Fillmore East in the spring of 1970, this CD (as well as a film of the same name) documents a slapdash extravaganza (the whole thing was conceived, organized, and abandoned over the course of two months) that overflows with big, brassy, rockin' soul. Front and center is Joe Cocker, a spastically charismatic Brit soul shouter. The bandleader is Leon Russell, playing some of the best rock piano ever waxed. And the crack company (boasting 21 singers and players) features the Rolling Stones' future horn section and Derek & the Dominoes' rhythm-section-in-waiting. Cocker shines on "Cry Me a River," "Give Peace a Chance," "The Letter," and a slew of other covers that benefit greatly from the volcanic arrangements whipped up by Russell and Chris Stainton. It may have been the Ray Charles revue for the Woodstock Generation, but, shockingly, the Genius himself hasn't made too many records that surpass this one

Rabies was a constant threat in Victorian Britain and gripped popular imagination, not least because its human form, hydrophobia, produced a vile death with the mind and body out of control. This book explores the changing understanding of rabies amongst veterinarians, animal welfare campaigners, state officials, politicians and the public.

How often, on your morning commute in to work, do you see someone on the train reading a bright pink book? It doesn't happen very often, especially if the reader is over the age of, say, eight. Thanks to "Mad Dogs and Englishmen", you too can witness the impossible, if you happen to share your commute with a "Doctor Who" fan. I have to admit that one of the reasons I read this book in a ridiculously fast three days was so I could minimize the amount of time people would see me, an attorney at law, reading a bright pink novel with a pink, cigarette-smoking and pistol-packing poodle, on the cover.

The Joe Cocker DVD Cry Me A River, dug out from the Rockpalast vaults, is a 1980 concert filmed at the Berlin’s famous Metropol. This is Cocker before he gained MOR appeal, and a few years after the furor of Mad Dogs And Englishmen. A fairly basic shot with the occasional view from the back of the house, this is a no-frills DVD of Joe Cocker doing what he does best and playing his greatest songs.
