Internationally acclaimed New York guitarist and composer Oz Noy follows his provocative two-volume exploration and reinvention of his blues roots (Twisted Blues) with Who Gives a Funk, due out April 15th – a examination of classic funk and R&B grooves, spiked with his uniquely unhinged improvisational instincts. “Simple, funky music – but soulful,” is how Noy describes it, while acknowledging that simple is not synonymous with easy: The discipline and clarity these classic structures demand put even the finest musicians to the test, and Noy and his all-star cohorts deliver a remarkable program that uncovers intriguing new pathways through timeless forms.

Joe Farnsworth is undoubtedly one of the best drummers today in the more traditional, straight-ahead school of jazz. He has appeared numerous times on Venus Records releases led by Eric Alexander, but this time he took the lead and made a fabulous album in tribute to his heroes, legendary jazz drummers. Farnsworth dedicates one tune for each drummer, either his own composition or a song associated with the drummer in question. They are, in the order of the tunes, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Billy Higgins, Art Taylor, Alan Dawson, Buddy Rich, Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Baby Dodds, and Roy Haynes. As expected, his bandmates and long-time collaborators (Eric Alexander, Harold Mabern, and Nat Reeves) do a fantastic job, but the focus of this album is clearly on Farnsworth and his fantastic drumming.

This performance recording captures the genuine excitement and swing when top quality musicians get together in the creation of jazz music. Baritone saxophonist Joe Temperley and tenor saxophonist Harry Allen blend together into a highly distinctive tonal mix. Their irresistible desire to play music with swing turns whatever they play into explosively dynamic music. The recording took place at Sunnie Sutton's Rocky Mountain Jazz Party in October 2006 and the tracks include Oscar Pettiford's classic line Blues In The Closet, jazz standards In A Mellotone and Jumpin' At The Woodside, as well as popular songs like Cocktails For Two, Sweet & Lovely, I've Got A World On A String, Polka Dots & Moonbeams and Everything Happens To Me.

Jazz / Bop / Vibes

Other than a Bethlehem album in 1955 and a few obscure titles, all of vibraphonist Joe Roland's recordings as a leader are on this enjoyable CD reissue. Roland, best-known for an early '50s stint with George Shearing's Quintet, was a excellent vibist whose style fell somewhere between Terry Gibbs and Milt Jackson. He is paired in two 1954 quintets with either Freddie Redd (who plays conventional bop) and Wade Legge (sounding at his most eccentric) on piano. However the most memorable set is from 1950 for Roland is joined by guitar (Joe Puma), bass, drums and a string quartet. The writing for the strings (which is uncredited) is quite inventive and, although the strings do not solo, they sound very much like a jazz ensemble. It is particularly interesting to hear this instrumentation playing "Half Nelson," "Dee Dee's Dance" and Roland's original "Sally Is Gone"; guest singer Paula Castle does a fine job on the haunting "Love Is Just a Plaything." Recommended.

Live at Midem with Stan Getz, Paul Horn, Mike Garson, and Jazz Gala '80 are a continuation of a new tradition at Midem — a performance and recording of major jazz artists and the up and coming international jazz stars at the world record convention. Stan Getz traveled from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, taking leave from a gig at Bubba's and arrived in Cannes with his musicians: Andy Leverne, Brian Bromberg, Chuck Loeb, Victor Jones, on the morning of the 23rd of January '80. The show and recording session were that evening taped with a twenty-four track mobile unit from Paris. Paul Horn was in Cannes for Midem, having traveled from his home in Canada. Sugar Blue and Patrick Artero arrived the day before by train from Paris, and Gayle Moran, Joe Farrell and Mike Garson suffered a time differential of nine hours between the South of France and their homes in Los Angeles. The show's form and substance took shape at the rehearsel. Jean Claude Ast, the French assistant producer orchestrated the complex rehearsel schedule with musicians and technical people staying at dozens of hotels in Cannes.

One for All has developed into one of the solid hard bop units, consisting of six talented New York-based musicians, most of whom have recorded a fair amount as individual leaders. With tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, trombonist Steve Davis, and trumpeter Jim Rotundi in the front line, along with pianist David Hazeltine, bassist David Williams, and drummer Joe Farnsworth providing a great rhythm section, the sextet delves into decades-old gems like "Killer Joe," "Matin Call," and "I Remember Clifford" with authority. But such a band needs to come up with original material to stay fresh, so Alexander contributed the mellow, sauntering ballad "Island," which features superb interplay among the horns. Davis penned the driving"Hot Sake," which sounds like it would have been perfect fodder for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, or any hard bop band. Recommended.
