His gaze is directed to the future, he has the history of jazz behind him, and he never kow-tows to convention. This piano genius loves freedom and fantasy, driven by the imperative to keep discovering the new. If the Joachim Kühn New Trio is his most recent adventure story, then “Love & Peace” is its second chapter.

A very unusual session for MPS – one that features mostly solo work by the four players named as 'leader' – Albert Mangelsdorff, Gunter Hampel, Joachim Kuhn, and Pierre Favre – each of whom get a few tracks to themselves, then join up for a few more duo tracks and one more quartet number.

The journey to realizing this album lasted several years. Its first stage was the writing of a cycle of jazz compositions which were inspired by Polish traditional dances, including the dances of national minorities. I got this idea from a compositional concept applied by Fryderyk Chopin, with the difference that my compositions were jazz themes, as opposed to classical pieces. Like Chopin, I titled these compositions with names of folk dances, and thus my Polonaises, Oberek, etc. came to be. In the initial version, I arranged these pieces for a nonet which included five wind instruments.

The Piano Quintet in A minor is "grand" in more ways than one. It lasts more than 37 minutes. Each movement possesses its own fascination. The first offers heaving, swelling romantic music and engages all the instruments in daunting fashion. The second is a haunting, relentless scherzo that starts off with a lighter sound to build suspense. The slow third, major key movement starts off in rather saccharine style but turns persuasive in its own way.

Leader of the European modernity early XXth century, Karol Szymanowski is still quite ignored today. A certain esotericism emanates from the music and of the artistic personality of this grand Polish lord. His fickleness and his language evolving with his influences : Strauss, Debussy, Scriabine in particular, could have been intimidating. And yet, there is hardly any music more immediately recognizable than Szymanowski’s,especially if you concentrate on his major and most significant works. One of his most identifiable « signatures » will be, for example, this « voice » of the violin, in the mysterious and upper register, sensual and immaterial at the same time, like the song of a heavenly mermaid…

Martial Solal and Joachim Kühn joined forces in 1975 for a duo piano concert during the debut of the Festival Independent de Massy. Both musicians enjoy showing off their right-handed runs in the opening to "Solar," before turning on the afterburners and really starting to wow the audience. The remaining two numbers are evidently on-the-spot duo improvisations, with "Journey Around the World" segueing through many different moods. "Musica 2000," a 19-minute excursion, is even more intense and clearly much further into the avant-garde camp. Throughout the concert, the two pianists are clearly inspired by each other. Released by Dreyfus in Europe, but not in the U.S., this recommended live CD may be somewhat difficult to acquire.

Johan Joachim Agrell (1701-1765) was in many ways a traveller between the worlds: in Uppsala, the Swede's great talent was recognized by the Hessian envoy, which resulted in Agrell being summoned to a court near Kassel in Germany. He later went as municipal chapel-master to Nuremberg. Musically, Agrell was a brilliant Baroque composer in whose works many of the new early Classical trends were anticipated.
