The summer of 1948 was spent by the Shostakoviches in Komarovo, a recreational area in the suburbs of Leningrad. In the bookstore in the train station, where Shostakovich had dropped in to buy something to read on the trip, he saw a collection of poems entitled "Jewish Folk Songs". The composer's interest in Jewish art was long-standing. He was familiar with Jewish folklore through a friend of his youth, S.Gershov, a pupil of Marc Chagall. Some modal attributes of Jewish folk melodies appeared in the composer's various compositions to convey sorrow and suffering.

If the print on this review goes blurry on your screen it’s because I’m still rubbing my eyes at the cast list on this astonishing trove of archive finds, unobtainable anywhere on line. The composer Dmitri Shostakovich was a capable pianist who sometimes participated in his own premieres. The people he played with were the elite of Russian music.

Siblings Gil and Orli Shaham's new release is an offering of Hebrew melodies. Jewish folk music has always played an integral part in the Shahams' lives; as Gil recalls he grew up hearing Achron's Hebrew Melody being sung by his grandparents in Jerusalem. Such music vividly evokes its troubled origins. 'When I think about the time, people lived such hard lives in such poverty in the shtetl, and I think literature and music was an incredible escape for them,' the violinist reflects, yet the Hebrew melodies' potency is such that they transcend the world from which they sprang. 'One very powerful aspect of this music is its soulfulness,' Orli Shaham says; 'I don't care what background you come from, I don't think you can listen to it without feeling that connection.'
