A study of Yosano Akiko (1878-1942), famous post-classical woman poet of Japan. It follows Yosano from childhood to her twenties, as she freed herself from the alienation and frustration that shadowed her early years and, to use her own words, "danced out into the light" of poetry and self-liberation. …

Haiku, the graceful and evocative form of Japanese poetry, celebrates nature in all its subtle and unobtrusive beauty. In Haiku Knits, this appreciation for understated, direct beauty is expressed in the texture of a felted skirt, the rhythm of a chain of twisted cables, or the casual elegance of an asymmetric sweater. Author Tanya Alpert, a knitwear designer and fiber artist, presents 25 simple, modern garments and accessories inspired by Japanese design, featuring innovative elements and beautiful fibers. These technically simple yet stylish and sophisticated designs will appeal to fashion-forward knitters at all skill levels. Illustrated throughout with stunning photographs, this elegant book also includes an appendix of essential techniques.

A Buddhist monk searches for mystical texts. French lords and ladies tell stories to pass the time. African warriors fight against European conquerors. These and other fascinating stories stem from some of the world's greatest literary masterpieces. Yet as different as they are, each reflects a common impulse: our need to tell stories. Whether around the campfire, between the covers of a great book, or in the theater, this urge to express life's meaning is a human constant.

A record that virtually defies categorization, Pearls Before Swine's 1968 epic Balaklava is the near-brilliant follow-up to One Nation Underground. Intended as a defiant condemnation of the Vietnam War, it doesn't offer anthemic, fist-pounding protest songs. Instead, Rapp vented his anger through surrealist poetry, irony, and historical reference: Balaklava was the 1854 Crimean War battle that inspired Alfred, Lord Tennyson to write his epic The Charge of the Light Brigade; in reality, the "Charge" was a senseless military action that killed scores of British soldiers. Balaklava begins with "Trumpeter Landfrey," an 1880's recording of the actual voice and bugle charge of the man who sounded the charge at Balaklava. It makes the transition into "Translucent Carriages," a mix of acoustic guitars, a basic vocal, and ghostly narration ("Jesus raised the dead…but who will raise the living?"), all the more stunning.
