In a note accompanying this new Winterreise with Jan Van Elsacker, the fortepianist and musicologist Tom Beghin asks what yet another new recording of Schubert’s great song-cycle might offer. The answer, in the first instance, is the instrument Beghin plays, a newly restored Gottlieb Hafner from Vienna c1830, whose five pedals – and attendant effects – Beghin is unafraid to employ.

For its new production, the quartet chose original transcripts (edits) originally of two piano cycles by Leoš Janácek – “On an overgrown Path” and “In the mists.” The result is a very interesting and impressive interpretation of Janacek's music. “On an Overgrown Path” is a cycle of fifteen piano pieces.

It is organized into two volumes, labeled as Book 1 and Book 2. The individual pieces are based largely on Moravian folk melodies. “In the Mists” is Janacek’s last substantial solo work for the piano. The piano cycle was written in 1912, a few years after Janacek had lost his daughter Olga and the major opera houses were rejecting his works. All four parts of the cycle are anchored in “misty” keys with many flats, and meter changes are frequent.

The music of Belgian-born Jan Van der Roost has been performed all over the world, gaining popular acclaim wherever it is heard. From Ancient Times pays tribute to the golden age of the Franco-Flemish School of the 15th and 16th centuries represented by composers such as Dufay, Ockeghem, Josquin Desprez and Lassus. Van der Roost's Sinfonia Hungarica evokes the dramatic events of the reigns of Attila the Hun, Árpád, the first ruler of Hungary, and István (Stephen I) who introduced Christianity into Hungary.

Commissioned by George Balanchine’s Ballet Society, The Minotaur is an exploration of the neo-classical style that marked the last traditional narrative Carter composed. It is joined on this album by settings of two poems by Robert Frost and the Piano Sonata, together illuminating the composer’s oft-overlooked early works; the details of these early pieces are at once complex, immediately graspable, and immensely powerful.

Following on from Hyperion’s hugely popular ‘Romantic Piano Concerto’ series, the ‘Classical Piano Concerto’ focuses on the lesser-known concertos from the dawn of the genre. Between about 1770 and 1820—the high classical period dominated by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven—musicians including Clementi, Cramer, Dussek, Steibelt, Woelfl and others made their names as composers and performers of piano concertos. This series aims to be the first in-depth recorded survey of this forgotten repertoire.
