A musician of nearly legendary prowess, Jan Akkerman for a time eclipsed Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck among reader polls in England as the top guitarist in the world. Akkerman was born in Amsterdam, Holland, and showed his musical inclinations early, taking up the guitar while still in grade school. His taste and interests were extraordinarily wide-ranging, from pop/rock to classical, with room for blues, Latin, and other influences.

What can a man do with a guitar?
Being referred to as one of the best guitarist on the globe this moment had to come: the ultimate guitar solo record. To be more specific: the ultimate guitar side of a record.

Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection.
Out of limited number of albums that I have on Jan Akkerman's solo works, this is the album that I like most for a very simple and basic reason: the music is nice even though not that progressive or not that jazz.

ESOTERIC RECORDINGS are pleased to announce the release of a newly remastered and expanded edition of the classic 1977 album by legendary guitarist Jan Akkerman. Released at the close of 1977 on Atlantic Records, Jan Akkerman’s self-titled album was his third solo album and his first solo work since departing Focus and was arguably more jazz – rock orientated in direction.

This Jan Akkerman record is a real gem! After firs spin I was convinced this by far his best live album. The material comes mainly from his self-titled record (1977), though Tommy (of the Eruption suite) of Focus is added and two new compositions in the spirit of the self-titled Jan Akkerman album. The recording of this live album is perfect, nothing more can be expected, not even today. For newcomers. Jan Akkerman is ex-guitarist of Dutch prog band Focus.

Eli is the fourth solo album by the Dutch guitarist Jan Akkerman. It appeared under the name "Jan Akkerman & Kaz Lux". The track "Strindberg" was written as a tribute to August Strindberg's works. A departure from the progressive rock that Focus (Akkerman's previous band) produced, "Eli" is a concept album with elements of jazz, pop, and funk intermixed. It won the Netherlands' Edison Award in 1976 for Best Album.

This self-titled reunion album is fantastic and one of my favorites in the Focus catalog for the same reason that it is mostly ignored: it only features two important members of the original band and the music is based much more in jazz-fusion and heavy new age.

Jan Akkerman was my favorite overall guitarist and the most influential to me as a young guitarist growing up in the '60s and '70s. He did it all: electric, acoustic, classical, and even lute. His music (especially of the '70s) was harmonically rich and compositionally ingenious, and his playing was totally unique and brilliant. He could exercise amazing restraint, or he could blow you away with his technical agility.
