Ivan Graziani: Agnese Dolce Agnese

This performance was recorded in Sydney in 1982 during a tour of Australia, when he was at or close to his vocal peak. The present disc was released to coincide with his recent tour of Australia. The concert takes the form of Rebroff singing, chatting to the audience, and also disappearing offstage a couple of times while a violinist and then two guitarists perform solos. Rebroff dresses in traditional Cossack costume complete with fur hat and coat. His over-the-top performance style has been accurately described as "kitsch", which will be off-putting for many viewers

Ivan the Terrible the second joint project of Sergei Eisenstein and Sergei Prokofiev is, much like Alexander Newski, a historical epic, portraying the rise and fall of the autocratic ruler Ivan IV in the 16th century. Sergei Prokofievs musical portrayal is unique in film history, for the score conceives both parts of the film on an epic scale. Prokofievs rich melodic invention thrives on the expressive sound palette of his native Russia, mostly as they echo the spiritual works of the Russian-orthodox liturgy.

Neither too nationalist nor too internationalist, this 1995 recording of Béla Bartók's two violin concertos featuring Thomas Zehetmair with Ivan Fischer leading the Budapest Festival Orchestra is just right. Austrian-born Zehetmair has a fabulous technique, a warm but focused tone, and lively sense of rhythm, all of which make him an ideal Bartók player. His interpretations are less about showing off then about digging in, and his performances are more about the music than they are about the musician. Hungarian conductor Fischer and his Hungarian orchestra are not only up for the music in a technical sense, they are also down with the music in an emotional sense, and their accompaniments ground Zehetmair's coolly flamboyant performances. Captured in white-hot sound that is almost too vivid for its own good, these performances deserve to stand among the finest ever recorded.

Carlo Graziani, born in the Italian city of Asti c1710 was one of the earliest cello virtuosos. Well-travelled, he played in London with the 7-year-old Mozart in 1764 and left many sets of sonatas and several concertos for his instrument. He retired from the Prussian court in 1773, to be succeeded by Jean-Pierre Duport, but he continued to work for Friedrich Wilhelm II on a very generous pension. His sonatas provide a fascinating example of his artistry and ability: rapid passage work, double-stopping and extensive use of the upper register.
