Trumpeter Brian Lynch has had an illustrious career, beginning with the Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and continuing as a member of the current Phil Woods Quintet. In between, he has led many projects and recorded many albums as a leader, and established himself as one of the top jazz trumpeters in the US. One of his assets is his deep understanding of and familiarity with Latin jazz, inspired by Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Roditi and developed through his collaborations with Brazillian, Puerto Rican and Cuban musicians. The Brian Lynch Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra is a culmination of these developments. The relatively small, nine-piece band features five horn players and two percussionists, and can sound as big and expansive or as tight and small as the situation demands. As we can see from this collection of medium- to slow-tempo boleros, this band represents an exemplary combination of authentic Latin rhythms and vigorous jazz improvisations.

Webster and pianist Montoliu went back a ways, having played together regularly in Webster's Copenhagen days. In fact, Montoliu cited Webster and Don Byas as his two chief musical influences. Webster and Montoliu understood each other deeply, and their comfort with on another is palpable in this recording. Their accompaniment of one another is seamless. On board with these two is Montoliu's regular working trio-mates, Eric Peter on bass and Peer Wyboris on drums.

Some players from Ray Charles' big band are joined by many ringers from the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands for the first half of this program, featuring Charles belting out six songs arranged by Quincy Jones. "Let the Good Times Roll" and "Deed I Do" are highlights, and there are solos by tenorman David "Fathead" Newman, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, and (on "Two Years of Torture") tenor Paul Gonsalves. Dan Nimmer is an American jazz pianist and composer. As the title suggests, Nimmer's second release for Venus Records is a tribute to Wynton Kelly, who was a swingy, bluesy and funky genius and a groove master who worked with Miles Davis and others. Jimmy Cobb, the veteran drummer who played with Kelly in the historic "Kind of Blue" session, bridges the two generations and validates Nimmer's efforts with his impeccable groove.
