One of the challenges with a live concert DVD is that it is very difficult to capture the atmosphere of the concert itself when the footage is edited. This will have been a consideration for the wonderful Iona, whose music is very dependent upon the ambience it creates…

…Turning to the grand and glorious Haffner, we find Brown’s tempos more aligned with Harnoncourt’s and surprisingly similar to George Szell’s early stereo-era recording, an interpretation that prefigured the biting articulation, clear textures, and propulsive energy of authentic (read: modern) performance practice. (…) Hänssler’s sound reflects the performances–vibrant, full, and dynamic. A great Mozart disc.

Iona's seventh album brings more of their patented progressive layered instrumentals and ambient respites, both seasoned by uilleann pipes, whistles, and other folk instruments. Unlike previous albums, however, Open Sky's instrumental passages possess more drive and body than before…

The first time I heard Iona was at a concert. I was stunned. I'd never heard of them before, and it was quite a surprise. For one thing, I used to think there was no such thing as a Christian prog band. Now I know better. Iona's music could be described as a mix of rock, traditional celtic melodies and a beautiful voice…

Almost 5 years after the release of IONA's last studio album 'The Circling Hour', the band's latest opus 'Another Realm' is now available. Over a year in the making, this is the band's first double CD studio album, with over 95 minutes of brand new, original music! The band has expressed that in some ways this album is like a new beginning and a renewing of that original vision which first inspired the formation of IONA…

In his autobiography of 1718 Telemann had this admission to make about his work during the period 1708-1712, when he was Konzertmeister and Hofkapellmeister at Eisenach: "Variety always gives pleasure, and it is in this spirit that I have worked on my concertos. Of these I must confess that none came right from the heart, although I have produced a fair number of them …" During these years he must have become acquainted with the new type of concerto introduced by Antonio Vivaldi which, with its alternation of ritornelli and soli, captivated the German composers.
Telemann must have been excited and stimulated by it but, unlike his younger colleagues, he remained all his life true to the influence of Corelli, Torelli, and Albinoni.

"La Cuna" is an album by GRAMMY Award-winning percussionist Ray Barretto, released by CTI label in 1981. Barretto perfectly straddles Afro-Cuban rhythms and grooving jazz fusion. Synths, sax and drums take charge in “Doloroso”, and the jubilant “La Cuna” boasts rumba rhythms that invigorate with experimental piano keys. With “Pastime Paradise”, a rendition of the groundbreaking Stevie Wonder hit, Barretto adds layers of buoyant, festive percussion to the soulful masterpiece; on the closing “Cocinando”, he maneuvers through conga acrobatics and fierce brass melodies with impressive finesse.

A hugely successful album on its release, “How Dare You” spawned two monster hits “I’m Mandy Fly Me” and “Art for Art’s Sake”. I remember I hardly had this off the turntable at the time. Each song is a gem, there is no filler on this brilliant album.

I'm afraid I cannot discuss this album in terms of "meribolant soul melodies" or such, but if you're looking for a peaceful and relaxed solo album from one of the top jazz guitarists, CHARACTERS might be just right for you.
