While Nabatov and Sarin met over 30 years ago (as participants of the famous Banff Jazz Workshop), the Johnson-Nabatov connection clocks at 3 years tops. Fortunately, this is hardly a primary factor in jazz and improvised music - often some of the finer moments result from spontaneous sessions or concerts. This is certainly true of this recording, made in NYC one day after the trio premiered in Brooklyn's venerable venue, IBeam. In spite of being freely improvised, the five pieces demonstrate a high level of cohesive thinking as a collective, the proposed ideas propagating and forms unfolding in convincingly natural fashion.

Pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, in a trio with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron, explores ten songs from movies scored by Italian film composer Ennio Morricone. While none of the pieces are standards, the ten that were chosen are each easily adaptable to jazz. Ranging from romps to waltzes and mood pieces, the music is (not too surprisingly) often cinematic and episodic, but the songs fare well standing independent of the films. Several of the pieces deserve to be covered by other jazz musicians looking for fresh material. While Pieranunzi is the lead voice, Johnson and Baron make important contributions to the swinging music. Recommended.

The view that capitalism is an inherently flawed, exploitative, crisis-prone, oppressive system is not new. But neoliberal capitalism’s flaws are increasingly dangerous in Western countries and globally as corporations exert growing influence on governments, as the endless pursuit of profits pushes our climate to the breaking point and as far-right politics dominate the media. Solutions are needed. Fast.
