Howe Gelb does not stand still. His next solo album Future Standards sees him fulfil a long time aspiration to play jazz standards. Inspired by the classics, his piano songs have found a clearer shape as "future standards" but have always been a central element to his creativity. Sitting neatly against his huge back catalogue of solo records, these compelling and timeless songs are alluringly melancholic and reflective. Often collaborating within his own bands and side projects, the album sees Howe (piano & vocals) joined by Thøger Lund (bass), Andrew Collberg (drums) and guests Lonna Kelley (vocals) and Naim Amor (guitar).

The forthcoming album, Heartbreak Pass, by seminal alt-country/rock band Giant Sand marks their 30th anniversary. Individually, each track on the record looms large on its own but, when heard as one complete offering, you know that you are listening to something very, very special. The Arizona desert has been a predominate theme and source of inspiration for Howe Gelb, the indie rock pioneer and frontman for Giant Sand. The group can also be looked at as Howe’s one-man-band with many guests and collaborators. The album features Steve Shelly (Sonic Youth), Grant-Lee Phillips and Ilse DeLange.

Cover Magazine is like a primer on long-running Arizona institution Giant Sand: a mix of highbrow and lowbrow influences rendered with exquisite musicianship, all saturated by the hushed, plainspoken vocals of Howe Gelb. Over the years, this revolving cast of characters has been compared to everyone from Bob Dylan to Neil Young (with or without Crazy Horse), but the strongest resemblance on this live outing is to the Band (Gelb even sounds a bit like Robbie Robertson) – …

There was an experiment with a near-electro album in 2010, and that was enough to send KT Tunstall in the opposite direction for this record. The sparse, countrified tone is new for her – it was recorded in Arizona, with Howe Gelb producing – but fits the reflective mood of the songs, half of them written after her father suddenly died and her marriage ended. The hallmark is delicacy: every song feels fragile. The track Made of Glass even has fragility as its subject – a friend who died of cancer left her a vase, which inspired this gently strummed meditation about breakable gifts.

Turbulence is the third studio album by Yes guitarist Steve Howe, released in 1991 through Relativity Records. It is Howe's first solo release since 1979, with his band including former Yes drummer Bill Bruford and former Ultravox keyboardist Billy Currie. The album is composed of guitar-based instrumentals, showcasing different genres that have influenced Howe. "Sensitive Chaos" contains a melody which would also be used in "I Would Have Waited Forever", the opening track to Yes' 1991 album Union.

File under "Yes." When this version of the band couldn't obtain rights to the name, they put their album out under their combined names, but it's still Yes by any other name. Jon Anderson's tenor wails through spacy lyrics, Rick Wakeman constructs cathedrals of synthesized sound, Steve Howe rips high-pitched guitar leads, and Bill Bruford makes his drums sound like timpani…
