A Communist coup took over the Afghan government, and the Russian Army soon followed to back it up in 1979.
America made it a priority to help defeat the Russians (as they had us in Vietnam) - billions of dollars and weapons were poured in. American Stinger missiles turned the tide - they shot down three Russian choppers the first day deployed.
