Heinrich Isaac’s “Missa Virgo prudentissima” stands out as a very rare work in the panorama of the Ordinary settings composed at the turn of the sixteenth century. Its monumental sound, linked to the six-voice texture - mostly used for timbral variety, but occasionally for fullness of sound - the imaginative use of its cantus firmus, and its mature and sure contrapuntal writing make it one of the most successful works by the Flemish master.

Today Heinrich Schütz (1585–1672) is considered the most important and influential German composer of the early baroque era. In his 55 years of service as chapel master to the court of Saxony in Dresden, he taught not only the choirboys in his chapel but music students sent to him from other German courts. His pupils were highly sought after as (court) chapel masters, orchestra leaders or church music directors throughout northern Europe.

This performance by violinst Alice Pierot and Les veilleurs de Nuit is part of a remarkable series from France's Alpha label, pairing mostly Baroque works with paintings of the era. The package for this disc shows an image of Mary awaiting the Annunciation, painted around 1475 by the Neapolitan Antonello da Messina. It's two centuries older than the Biber cycle, and it's quite simple – the painting has nothing of the wildly ornate, extreme, experimental quality of Biber's music, which makes extensive use of scordatura or unorthodox violin tuning.

Georg Frederic Handel was a true cosmopolitan: in Italy, he gained a familiarity with opera; in London, he himself stood in the limelight. Texts in Handel's native language, in contrast, feature only very sparsely within his oeuvre. Among these, the Neun Deutsche Arien are his last settings of German texts. Handel did not specify the instrumentation for these pieces, allowing modern-day performers to forge musical partnerships at their leisure: the inspiring cooperation between the young countertenor Fritz Spengler and the Baroque ensemble Contrapunctus has resulted in an album that aims to underline the importance of the German aria in the Baroque age.

Weber’s chamber music – just these three pieces if you don’t count the duos – clearly shows him on the cusp between Classical and Romantic. The Quartet for piano and strings, written in his early twenties between 1807 and 1809, begins with a Haydnesque gracefulness and politeness which is gradually invaded by more unruly harmonies and textures; the dramatic slow movement looks ahead to Schumann, while the closing fugue of the finale dresses 18th-century procedures in 19th-century colours. Then there’s the element of virtuosity which is a hallmark of the early Romantic era, in the showy piano part of the Quartet, which Weber wrote for himself, the concerto-like clarinet part in the Quintet with strings, designed for the pioneering Heinrich Baermann, and all three parts of the tuneful Trio for flute, cello and piano. The talented members of the pan-European Gaudier Ensemble are perfectly equipped to convey these different aspects of Weber’s musical personality, with the fleet-fingered pianist Susan Tomes leading the way in the Quartet and Trio, and Richard Hosford in the Clarinet Quintet recalling contemporary descriptions of Baermann’s own effortless brilliance.

This album is the first recording of the complete violin sonatas by Ignaz Franz von Biber. The violin sonatas of Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber (1644-1704) have come to represent the pinnacle of seventeenth-century violin playing and composition due to their inventiveness and technical difficulty. Biber is especially known for his extensive use of scordatura, the practice of retuning the violin strings of different pitches than those normally used. This music is played with full technical command and imagination by Igor Ruhadze and his Ensemble I Violini Capricciosi, consisting of cello, theorbo, organ and harpsichord. These artists gained international recognition for their staggering recording of the complete works by Pietro Antonio Locatelli.

Biber's 'Rosary Sonatas' for violin and basso continuo stand alone in the violin literature and in music history, offering a unique combination of programmatic material and the use of scordatura. The cycle consists of fifteen sonatas for violin and basso continuo, and a closing Passacaglia for solo violin, composed c.1687. Through the copper engravings inserted at the head of each sonata in the manuscript depicting key moments in the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary, the music has become associated with the Catholic Mysteries of the Rosary.
