Hot on the heels of his vinyl release for Cellar Live in 2015, New York saxophonist Grant Stewart returns with his trio for Roll On. Stewart's lyrical tenor is at the forefront of a 9-song set that includes music from bebop masters like Elmo Hope and Fats Navarro, as well as beautifully arranged interpretations of standard material. The album is a steady burn from the first beat to the last.

Grant Stewart's 2005 session for the Japanese Video Arts label features several musicians of his generation, including the highly regarded guitarist Joe Cohn and seasoned bassist Joel Forbes, drummer Phil Stewart, and the twenty-ish rising pianist Ehud Asherie. The tenor saxophonist's program mixes hard bop, Brazilian pop hits from the '60s, and originals in an enticing program. His performances of overlooked hard bop gems include Sonny Clark's "Cool Struttin'," Hank Mobley's breezy "Soul Station," and the Elmo Hope/Sonny Rollins collaboration "Carving the Rock," all interpreted with strong solos throughout. Stewart recalls the big-toned boppers of the '50s with his brisk setting of Billy Strayhorn's "Raincheck." His breezy take of "Felicidade" and the rhapsodic treatment of the bittersweet "Estate" also merit praise. Fellow tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander is an added guest for two of the leader's originals.

TRIO is a varied and balanced program of material. Grant, like so many of the better musicians of his generation, has a knack for resurrecting jazz compositions from the ‘50s and ‘60s that are overlooked gems. Freddie Redd’s typically sunny “A Time To Smile” from “The Connection” cover that territory here. “Everything I Love” is medium-up but joyous and swinging with a delightful danceable groove that Phil lays down on the ride cymbal. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller’s “Is That All There Is” is their 1969 ode to ennui in a bid to be seen as more than R & B songwriters. It was recorded in “grande dame” style by Peggy Lee and became a big hit. Here the trio mercifully leaves the drama on the theatre stage and fashions the great melody in an easy, cool swing much the way Sonny Rollins made cowboy songs sound hip on “Way Out West.”…

During this time, Stewart became an excellent songwriter in his own right, penning (or co-penning) a number of tunes here, including the transcendent "Maggie May" and the surging "Every Picture Tells a Story." More extensive than 1976's THE BEST OF ROD STEWART and slightly outshining '92's THE MERCURY ANTHOLOGY, GOLD is ideal for anyone seeking a thorough sampler of Stewart's early solo work…

Energipsy plays gypsy rumba with a young soul and sure-fire instincts . Maybe the most exciting sound to emerge since the Gypsy Kings ignited international audiences in the 80s. Their songs are full of infectious energy with elements of flamenco, contemporary pop, and world music in the mix as well. The result is a kind of "gypsy new wave;" a bold fusion of age-old musical traditions with rhythms and sounds that will fire your gypsy soul. Francesco Grant is the lead guitarist and group leader. He is Italian with Scottish roots, and has strong ties to the Camargue. This distinct cultural mix has surely produced a stimulating musical fusion, a hybrid combination of Spanish flamenco, European pop melodies, Catalan rumba and a myriad of blues, funky and rock influences. Francesco Grant received his first guitar at the age of eight. He was musically inspired by the great guitarist Manitas de Plata. His maestros were… all the flamenco records he could get hold of! But apart from practising "by ear" the music of the best flameco artists, he also studied guitarists such as Baden Powell, Paco de Lucia, José Feliciano and others. He then had a solid base from which to create his own personal style.

Kicking off with the swagger and machismo of one of the quintessential 70's anthems, "Hot Legs", FOOT LOOSE AND FANCY FREE is a blistering joyride, a swaggering period piece that, like all of Rod's best work, immerses itself in the prevalent style of the time– by 1977, funk-tinged rock was all therage, and FOOT LOOSE is a carnival of wah-wah guitars ("You're Insane"), epic arrangements ("You Just Keep Me Hanging On"), and unabashed earnestness (the nostalgic and confessional "I Was Only Joking".) …

On his debut album (titled An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down in Britain, and The Rod Stewart Album in America, presumably because its original title was "too English" or cryptic for U.S. audiences), Rod Stewart essays a startlingly original blend of folk, blues, and rock & roll. The opening cover of the Stones' "Street Fighting Man" encapsulates his approach. Turning the driving acoustic guitars of the original inside out, the song works a laid-back, acoustic groove, bringing a whole new meaning to the song before escalating into a full-on rock & roll attack – without any distorted guitars, just bashing acoustics and thundering drums…
