There’s something evident about a good song – something that ties square dance music to punk rock anthems. A good interpreter knows how to look below the surface and see through to the core. On his solo debut Outsider, fiddle player Philip Glenn focuses on the center of ten songs, drawing threads that connect Appalachian music to the Ramones and Monk. A good song makes itself known, but it takes a good player to notice.

We didn’t see (or, more exactly, heard) this coming. How could we expect a band like The Heat Death to turn their attention to the music of Glenn Miller? But here it is, once again confirming the notion that everything is possible when coming from the Scandinavian scene.

There were numerous obscure attempts, most of them commercially and artistically unsuccessful, by folk revival veterans to move into folk-rock-pop in the last half of the 1960s. For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her is Yarbrough's. Although Yarbrough's usual idea of a contemporary singer/songwriter to cover on record was limited to Rod McKuen, here he tackles many of the giants: Simon & Garfunkel (the title cut), Buffy Sainte-Marie ("Until It's Time for You to Go"), Ian & Sylvia ("The French Girl"), Bob Dylan ("Tomorrow Is a Long Time"), Phil Ochs ("Pleasures of the Harbor" and "Crucifixion"), and, most unexpectedly, Buffalo Springfield (with what must have been one of the very few covers of Stephen Stills' "Everybody's Wrong").

On his prior 1967 LP, For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her, Yarbrough had tried to move into contemporary folk-rockish covers, with negligible sales and not much greater artistic success. With Honey & Wine there also seemed to be inclinations to update his sound, but great uncertainty as to which way his music should pull. There was just a bit of a nod to pop/rock on the album, primarily in the title cut, a cover of a relatively little-known Gerry Goffin-Carole King composition.

The instantly recognizable tenor of legendary folksinger Glenn Yarbrough – the voice of the Limeliters and eventually Coca-Cola – launches into a three-quarter time version of "Waltzing Matilda" without the slightest bit of irony on 1957's Come Sit by My Side. His second recording (the first arrived in 1951) was a veritable set list for what was to become the folk revival, and it remains one of the most definitive recordings of the genre.

AD Music is pleased to present this tribute album from Glenn Main, who’s first Introduction to the music of Jean Michel Jarre was a cassette recording of ‘Equinoxe’ and ‘Oxygene’ when he was just 9 years old. From the first play of ‘Equinoxe part 1’, Glenn was hooked and he repeatedly listened to the tape on headphones while hiding under his bedsheets. Glenn has followed the music of Jarre ever since and remains an avid fan, and his own music is clearly influenced by the French maestro…
