Glenn Miller's reign as the most popular bandleader in the U.S. came relatively late in his career and was relatively brief, lasting only about three and a half years, from the spring of 1939 to the fall of 1942. But during that period he utterly dominated popular music, and over time he has proven the most enduring figure of the swing era, with reissues of his recordings achieving gold record status 40 years after his death. Miller developed a distinctive sound in which a high-pitched clarinet carried the melody, doubled by a saxophone section playing an octave lower, and he used that sound to produce a series of hits that remain definitive examples of swing music. Miller's approach is not much appreciated by jazz fans…

“Gould’s approach seems downright unmusical, and the image it evokes for me is of the trained seal who beeps out God Save the Queen on a set of car horns.” Thus the miffed critic John Beckwith. It was to remain Gould’s only commercial recording on the organ; the remaining items in The Art of the Fugue are absent from his discography, as are the six Mendelssohn organ sonatas he intended to record afterwards.

For many, the albums Glenn Gould recorded for Columbia between 1955 and 1981 are documents of unalloyed genius, particularly in his imaginative and masterful performances of Bach's keyboard works. For others, less enamored of Gould's recondite theorizing, studio editing, and distracting personal eccentricities (such as humming along out of tune while he played), these recordings are nonetheless fascinating documents of an original mind and still worth studying for their undeniable musicality.

(1969 Recording, Rechannelled for Stereo) - Gould Remastered
Gould’s last phonograph recording with orchestra. After the death of Vladimir Golschmann, on 1 March 1972, he declined to complete his Bach series by recording Concerto No. 6 (BWV 1057) and abandoned his plan to re-record the D-minor Concerto (BWV 1052) in stereo.

The circumstances surrounding this April 6, 1962 concert at Carnegie Hall are as legendary as the performance itself. Pianist Gould desired to play the piece at a slower-than-usual tempo, Bernstein (who was conducting the New York Philharmonic) did not. Gould prevailed, but Bernstein shared his disavowal in an infamous pre-concert speech to the audience. This CD-the concert recording's first authorized release-includes Bernstein's speech, the complete performance and a revealing Glen Gould interview recorded two years later.

Ten years after the release of the D-minor Concerto under Leonard Bernstein (see No. 3), Gould now issued Volume 1 of the Bach concertos under Vladimir Golschmann. “I want to tell you how much I enjoyed the recording. Please keep in mind always that if no other conductor will go into the studio with you, I will go!”
