'Dimitrij' was presented in several different versions during the composer's lifetime. It was premiered in 1882, with cuts and revisions occuring in the 1886 piano reduction. The work was further revised in 1894 (this version premiered in Prague in that year), however the final performances in Dvořák's lifetime (in Plzeň in 1904) consisted of the first version combined with the third act in the second version.

Gerd Albrecht was a leading German conductor. He was best known for his interpretations of late Romantic and 20th century German repertory. His father was Hans Albrecht (1902-1961), a well-known musicologist. He was a choral scholar at the age of 15 and began conducting when he was 16. He studied at the Hamburg Musikhochschule (Hamburg Music Academy) from 1955 to 1958.

The so-called “Study Symphony”, sometimes known as Symphony No. 00, dates from six years previously and understandably contains far fewer of the Brucknerian trademarks his aficionados prize; indeed some might concur with the verdict of Bruckner’s teacher Otto Kitzler who adjudged it to be “uninspired”, a criticism somewhat at odds with the appreciative and appreciable notes from Dr Rainer Boss. My colleague Michael Cookson, who reviewed this disc last March, also summons up rather more enthusiasm for it than I feel inclined to express but I am in full agreement that it could hardly be given better advocacy than it receives here from Schaller and the excellent Philharmonie Festiva, who have already proved their prowess in their series of recordings of the complete Bruckner symphonies on Profil.

The first recording in the cpo SYMPHONIC JAZZ SERIES with the WDR Radio Orchestra of Cologne is entitled American Connection. Concertos for jazz clarinet by Jorge Calandrelli, Daniel Freiberg, and Jeff Beal are heard in performances with the world-famous clarinettist Andy Miles. Andy Miles is one of the youngest representatives of a guild whose members received posts as solo clarinettists in German orchestras (in his case with the Hamburg Philharmonic). Later he made his way to Cologne as the principal clarinettist of the WDR Radio Orchestra. Thanks to his ‘wild past’ as a saxophonist in rock bands, a tin whistler in folk bands, and a clarinettist in various jazz bands, Miles is among the few genuine crossover musicians who succeed in mediating between classical and jazz music because they feel at home in both of them.

Recordings of Bruckner’s last and greatest Mass are not exactly scarce but this most recent live performance from the celebrated Ebrach festival has claim to being regarded as special, not just for its own considerable merits, but also as it is presented by Profil in a double CD package in tandem with the barely known Psalm 146 and the further bonus of conductor-musicologist and performer Gerd Schaller playing six works on the Eisenbarth organ in the Abteikirche.
