Elverskud (The Elf-King's Daughter) is a dramatic cantata from 1854, based on Danish medieval ballads. It became one of Niels W. Gade's greatest successes, not only in his native Denmark, but throughout Europe, where Elverskud was performed several hundred times, often conducted by Gade himself. Gade was especially admired in Germany, and on this album Elverskudis not only played on period instruments for the first time, but is also sung for the first time with the German text that brought the work international fame.

Composer Niels Gade ( 1817-1890) is considered to be the most influential Danish musician of his time. He was also a successful teacher, conductor, violinist, and organist. This release is the second volume in the exploration of Gade’s chamber music, and includes his String Quartet in E minor with extra movements, the first movement of a Piano Trio in B-flat major, and Scherzo in C sharp minor for Piano Quintet. “Even in the intricate texture the individual voices remain transparent; the focus on what is essential is more important than everything experimental. The MidtVest ensemble relies on flowing lines, not on leaden ritardandi, on well-rounded formulations instead of roughly delineated blocks.” (FonoForum of Vol. 1).

There is, of course, no shortage of Romantic-era violin concertos in the instrument's standard repertoire. None of them found with any regularity on the concert stage, however, hail from Denmark. This DaCapo album demonstrates that there are indeed examples that come to us from the Scandinavian country, and even that some of them are inexplicably excluded from the modern canon.

“We welcome the fact that cpo has now taken up Gade’s chamber music: it is wonderfully written and does not deserve to disappear into the footnotes of music history writing. The MidVest Ensemble completely dedicates itself to Gade and on this perfectly balanced recording performs the works with an open naturalness displaying his music in a highly favorable light.” This is what FonoForum wrote in 2016 about Vol. 2 of cpo’s Gade recording series based on the new historical-critical complete edition of his works.

Not German; not Russian; not experimental; but rather Nordic in feel - by which I mean styles all the way from lyrical like Grieg to grandly flowing like Sibelius. Seems both ancient and modern at the same time and the violinist who holds it all together, Kai Laursen, has a lovely touch that ranges from sweet and gentle to piercingly powerful.

Since the first application of dendrimers in catalysis in the mid 1990s, this field has advanced rapidly. As a consequence, catalytically active dendrimers have emerged as a class of molecular catalysts that has substantially enriched the field of homogeneous (and in part heterogeneous) catalysis. A general survey of transition metal dendrimer catalysts and the way they have developed is followed by in-depth discussions of dendritic transition metal catalysis based on non-covalent catalyst-support interaction and an overview of the rapidly growing field of stereoselective dendrimer catalysis. The development of dendrimer-encapsulated bimetallic nanoparticles has provided the interface with heterogeneous colloid catalysis. As cheaper and readily accessible alternatives to regular dendrimers, hyperbranched polymers are increasingly being used as catalyst platforms. These topics are complemented by a review of metallodendritic exoreptors for the redox recognition of oxo-anions and halides.

Written over the course of thirty-five years, the Lyric Pieces accompanied Edward Grieg’s (1843-1907) entire career as a composer. The first volume appeared in 1867, when a youthful Grieg compiled some of his early compositions into a set of six pieces. They are a glimpse into his aesthetics, since much of the material he used for this first group is derived from the sounds of Norwegian folklore. It helped in the effort to create a much needed national musical identity, and Grieg would eventually be recognized as being Norway’s most important contributor.

The Japanese company, BMG Japan, sorted the original RCA RED SEAL CDs according to the composers and the year when the music pieces were created. BEST100 series are the best representative CDs, which were carefully chosen from those music pieces by acting and recording, and they were released again with the mark of RCA BEST100. These CDs are the most impressive records in the classical field at RCA’s best. Theoretically, we could find the single originals of those CDs, but BMG Japan reorganised excellently for everyone. During BMG Japan period, it was released for the first time in 1999 and for the second time in 2008 after SONY took over BMG. BEST100 series belong to the latter.

Olivier Vernet’s outstanding career has confirmed the hopes raised by the numerous awards he received over the course of his studies with Gaston Litaize at the Conservatoire National de Région in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, Marie-Claire Alain at the Conservatoire National de Région in Rueil Malmaison, and Michel Chapuis in the class where he won first prize for organ at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris.
