Confronting Drought in Africa's Drylands: Opportunities for Enhancing Resilience (Africa Development Forum)

Confronting Drought in Africa's Drylands: Opportunities for Enhancing Resilience (Africa Development Forum) by Raffaello Cervigni
English | May 9, 2016 | ISBN: 1464808171 | 299 Pages | PDF | 4 MB

Drylands represent the front line in the battle for poverty eradication and resource conservation in Africa. While we know that millions of people in drylands are exposed to the threat of land degradation and periodically fall victim to droughts and other shocks, actions to address these challenges have been fragmented, too many times prompted only by humanitarian crises, and in the end largely inadequate. This book provides a solid, evidence-based assessment of the potential for the many interventions that can improve crop and livestock production and allow better stewardship of natural resources, thereby significantly lowering the numbers of people exposed to risk.
Highways to Success or Byways to Waste: Estimating the Economic Benefits of Roads in Africa (Africa Development Forum)

Roads are the arteries through which the economy pulses. They connect sellers to markets, workers to jobs, students to education, and the sick to hospitals. Yet much of the developing world, Africa in particular, lacks adequate transportation infrastructure. Accordingly investments in transportation remain a cornerstone of the development agenda. Sub-Saharan Africa spends roughly $6.8 billion per year on paving roads, and the World Bank invests more on roads than on education, health, and social services combined.

Africa's Demographic Transition: Dividend or Disaster? (Africa Development Forum) by David Canning
English | Oct. 15, 2015 | ISBN: 1464804893 | 217 Pages | PDF | 14 MB

Africa is poised on the edge of a potential takeoff to sustained economic growth. This takeoff can be abetted by a demographic dividend from the changes in population age structure. Declines in child mortality, followed by declines in fertility, produce a 'bulge' generation and a large number of working age people, giving a boost to the economy. In the short run lower fertility leads to lower youth dependency rates and greater female labor force participation outside the home. Smaller family sizes also mean more resources to invest in the health and education per child boosting worker productivity. In the long run increased life spans from health improvements mean that this large, high-earning cohort will also want to save for retirement, creating higher savings and investments, leading to further productivity gains.

The Challenge of Stability and Security in West Africa (Africa Development Forum)

The Challenge of Stability and Security in West Africa (Africa Development Forum) by Alexandre Marc
English | June 19, 2015 | ISBN: 1464804648 | 215 Pages | PDF | 16 MB

Since independence, the West African sub-region has been an arena for a number of large-scale conflicts and civil wars, as well as simmering and low-intensity uprisings. Contrary to perceptions, West Africa in its post-independence history has experienced fewer conflict events and fatalities from conflict than the other sub-regions on the continent. The turn of the millennium has witnessed the recession of large-scale and conventional conflict, and it has ushered in new and emerging threats. The specters of religious extremism, maritime piracy, and narcotics trafficking threaten to
undermine some of the progress achieved in recent years.
Great Teachers: How to Raise Student Learning in Latin America and the Caribbean (Latin American Development Forum)

Great Teachers: How to Raise Student Learning in Latin America and the Caribbean (Latin American Development Forum) by Barbara Bruns
English | Oct. 28, 2014 | ISBN: 1464801517 | 375 Pages | PDF | 5 MB

The seven million teachers of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are the critical actors in the region's efforts to improve education quality and raise student learning levels, which lag far behind those of OECD countries and East Asian countries such as China. This book documents the high economic stakes around teacher quality, benchmarks the current performance of LAC's teachers, and delineates the key issues. These include low standards for entry into teacher training, poor quality training programs that are detached from the realities of the classroom, unattractive career incentives, and weak support for teachers once they are on the job.
Entrepreneurship in Latin America: A Step Up the Social Ladder? (Latin American Development Forum)

Entrepreneurship in Latin America: A Step Up the Social Ladder? (Latin American Development Forum) by Eduardo Lora
English | Dec. 18, 2013 | ISBN: 1464800081 | 210 Pages | PDF | 1 MB

This book looks at both the potential and limits of policies to promote entrepreneurship as an important vehicle for social mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean. Who are the region's entrepreneurs? They tend to be middle-aged males with secondary and, often, tertiary education who represent only a small segment of the economically active population in the six countries considered in this book. They come from families in which a parent is, or was, an entrepreneur. In fact, a parent's occupation is more important in the decision to become an entrepreneur than a parent's wealth, income or education.
