Sylvie Vartan is a French pop institution, as popular today as when she first took the yé-yé scene by storm in 1962. The vivacious and always stylish Sylvie was also a pioneer amongst the new breed of French female artists, crossing the Atlantic several times in the early 60s to record. She proved remarkably adept at tackling material in English, which resulted in many superb recordings chanted in a husky, compelling accent. Her main foreign release in that era was the US-only album "Gift Wrapped From Paris". It combined tracks from the 1963 "Sylvie à Nashville" LP along with new sessions cut in New York in late 1964 with a crack session crew plus Ellie Greenwich and friends on backing vocals, all directed by Sylvie's brother Eddie Vartan. Later on Sylvie recorded in England and utilised the talents of her British in-house writers, Tommy Brown and Micky Jones, the latter later to become famous in the band Foreigner.

Storm Front is the 11th studio album by Billy Joel and his first to be recorded digitally. Released in 1989 (see 1989 in music), the album featured one of Joel's three #1 hits, "We Didn't Start the Fire", a fast-paced song mentioning some of the major historical events that took place in his time. "I Go to Extremes", a song describing the ups and downs of his life, placed at #6. Other songs that placed in the top 100 were "And So It Goes" (#37), "The Downeaster 'Alexa'" (#57), and "That's Not Her Style" (#77). The cover depicts a storm warning flag.

The album itself peaked at #1 on the charts

Nelly Furtado has never been one to stand still musically. Since the beginning of her career, she's used pop, hip-hop, dance, folk and multiple variations of Latin music as inspiration. So to call her latest album, The Ride — made in collaboration with Angel Olsen and St. Vincent producer John Congleton — a departure would be a bit of a misnomer. Rather, it's a long overdue stopover in the indie world, a place that's become much friendlier to pop stars over the past decade.

Pokey LaFarge’s self-styled image as dusty old troubadour extends even to his name, a handle that sounds borrowed from a freight train-hopping, dustbowl-era storyteller of a certain Woody Guthrie vintage. Eight albums on, he’s done little to alter that perception, thanks to a sound that traces its roots to the back porches of America’s heartland. From the sly saunter of opening track “Riot in the Streets” to the vampish “Mother Nature,” LaFarge and his feisty six piece band sound like refugees from the roadhouse circuit, all sass and swagger with plenty of juke jump energy to spare.

The monumental creativity which Beethoven, Haydn and Bartók gave to the genre of the string quartet is our greatest inspiration. In the Harp we find Beethoven at his most entertaining and least problematic, although slightly provocative in the almost forced gentleness of the final movement. We chose to record the String Quartet 1956 including its incredibly atmospheric final Largo in honour of one of Norway's greatest composer, Arne Nordheim. The intensity and individuality of Bartók's 3rd Quartet make it a natural conclusion for us, juxtaposing the most intimate and lonely music with hard-hitting rhythmic sections which only Bartók could bring off.
