The brand new masterpiece of German epic metal pioneers EQUILIBRIUM, "Armageddon", is out now! Guitarist, composer and lyricist René Berthiaume spent almost two years working on this new opus called "Armageddon". The result is rather dark, yet remains the bombast and folk elements of the previous records. The Limited Edition Digipak includes a bonus CD with the instrumental version of the whole album.
Turisas - folk / viking metal band from Finland. Turisas name came from the name of the god of war in the epic Kalevala Tursas (or one of Odin's Rune - Thurisaz - Hammer of Thor). Some critics call the style in which the band plays, Battle metal - the title of the first album.Music band Turisas was founded in 1997 by Mathias Nyugardom (vocals) and Jussi Wikström (guitar). The first full-length album was released in 2004 on Century Media, and it was called "Battle Metal". Replacing him has never been found, and since then the group is only one guitarist.
Northsong is the Symphonic Folk/Viking metal solo project founded by Cortland Runyon in 2010, which blends epic symphonies, heavy guitars, folk instruments, and a varying range of vocals to create an adventurous and battle-like atmosphere. Bagpipes, whistles, accordion, lyrics about Odin and Thor - oh yes, this is folk metal. Vanir are a young danish folk metal band, and their debut full-length Særimners Kød consists of 11 songs of folk/viking metal in the vein of bands like Korpiklaani, Alestorm, Finntroll and the already established danish folk metal frontiersmen in Svartsot.
Produced By the band themselves and featuring many well-known names from the Finnish folk metal scene, this latest offering is essentially one epic number divided into nine shorter sections: an unashamedly OTT journey to the cold & merciless north, drawing on a wide variety of musical genres – from brutal black metal right through to folk music, orchestrated, classical interludes, angelic vocal melodies & spoken passages, the whole thing steeped in the sort of atmosphere & grandeur more typically found on big-budget movie soundtracks. According to Crimfall themselves, "Our second album is more epic, more grandiose, more extreme & more dramatic than our debut…"
The extent of how heavy metal, in its various genres, has become an international phenomen continues to amaze me. When I thought I've heard every variation, along comes Portugal's Gwydion playing mixture of black, folk, and viking metal on their latest Horn Triskelion, something more often reserved for bands from Scandinavia….
Through “Laguz” the Black Metal pioneers Ancient Rites mark a new chapter in the band's history. The album was recorded at Spacelab Studio, Grefrath, Germany, produced by Christian "Moschus" Moos, orchestrated by Oliver Phillips and mastered by Eroc at Eroc's Mastering Ranch. As always, each album sounds different from the other, yet all works are recognisably Ancient Rites, displaying an own style and authenticity. “Laguz” is an invitation to enter long forgotten worlds through the dark/historical lyrics and the music, which combines fierce Metal with classical orchestrations in order to evoke era's buried by time and dust.
