When Carl Palmer was unable to join Keith Emerson and Greg Lake for a mid-‘80s ELP reunion, his resourceful cohorts drafted veteran British skin-basher Cozy Powell, who had played with Jeff Beck, Rainbow, and many others. Thus constituted, Emerson, Lake & Powell released a self-titled album in 1986 and embarked on a tour. The Sprocket Sessions were originally released as a pair of bootlegs, one consisting of the band's studio rehearsals for the tour, and one containing a concert recording from Lakeland, FL. Endorsed by the band and cleaned up from an original master, this disc consists of the former.

Never really liked the Emerson,Lake and Powell album so I'm quite surprised how good this is. Cozy Powell (RIP) briefly replaced Palmer in the eighties incarnation of ELP but was always going to struggle to make the drum stool his own.Palmer after all was one of the best drummers in the seventies rock scene. Powell was without question a great heavy rock drummer but you would not expect symphonic prog to be his forte.

Emerson, Lake & Powell is the only studio album recorded by the ELP offshoot band of the same name. It was recorded in 1985 and released in 1986 on Polydor Records. However, two further albums comprising rehearsals and live material were subsequently issued in 2003 (see band article for details). The album's cover graphic is based on the corporate logo used in the 1930's by the German cigarette manufacturer, Haus Bergmann.

ELPowell emerged when a mid-1980s reunion was sidelined due to Carl Palmer's contractual obligation to Asia. So, with Palmer's blessing, Emerson and Lake recruited fellow British skin basher Cozy Powell. Powell had worked with several popular hard rock acts (from The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow & Black Sabbath) and had a noticeably harder and more pronounced percussive approach.

Pictures at an Exhibition is a live album by the English progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in November 1971 on Island Records. It is a recording of the band's arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, performed at Newcastle City Hall on 26 March 1971. Emerson wished to arrange the piece after seeing an orchestral performance of it several years before. He bought a copy of the score, and pitched the idea to Lake and Palmer, who agreed to adapt it.
