ELP initially wanted to release this album as a free give away with "Tarkus", but common sense prevailed and it was released in the UK, on "Island Records". An exceptionally well recorded album - the drums, in particular, are captured with clarity and dynamics, and the mix is very well balanced. "Pictures at an Exhibition" is a great album from my childhood and it still gives me excitement and fun to hear this LP. Dim the lights tonight, increase the **volume and Enjoy! ** Beware: The ultimate "workout" for your speakers :-) Note: Tracks walk-over in each other; so gapless burning is essential to seamless play the whole album.

One of the seminal documents of the progressive rock era, a record that made its way into the collections of millions of high-school kids who never heard of Modest Mussorgsky and knew nothing of Russia's Nationalist "Five." It does some violence to Mussorgsky, but Pictures at an Exhibition is also the most energetic and well-realized live release in Emerson, Lake & Palmer's catalog, and it makes a fairly compelling case for adapting classical pieces in this way. At the time, it introduced "classical rock" to millions of listeners, including the classical community, most of whose members regarded this record as something akin to an armed assault.

Pictures at an Exhibition is a live album by the English progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in November 1971 on Island Records. It is a recording of the band's arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, performed at Newcastle City Hall on 26 March 1971. Emerson wished to arrange the piece after seeing an orchestral performance of it several years before. He bought a copy of the score, and pitched the idea to Lake and Palmer, who agreed to adapt it. Pictures at an Exhibition went to number 2 on the UK Albums Chart and number 10 on the US Billboard 200.

"Alexander Kobrin today is Van Cliburn yesterday." Such a flattering comparison, expressed by BBC music commentators, characterizes A. Kobrin as one of the most outstanding representatives of modern pianoforte.

Pianist Daniel Hill pairs one of Schubert's last sonatas—the Piano Sonata No. 20 in A Major, D. 959, written during the composer's last months—with the solo piano transcription of Mussorgsky's famous Pictures at an Exhibition, made by the composer himself, on this release from Willowhayne Records.

The Hungarian conductor Antal Doráti had already made several recordings in the US with various orchestras for the Mercury label when Philips engaged him to begin working in the studio with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. There had been thrilling accounts of Tchaikovsky from both Minneapolis and Chicago and so it was to be expected that Doráti’s Dutch recordings would begin by concentrating on Slavic repertoire – indeed just as Philips itself had done: the label was launched in 1950 with a recording of the Fourth Symphony conducted by Willem van Otterloo.

Philippe Jordan conducts the Orchestre de l’Opéra national de Paris in much-loved works by Russian composers: Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’ Symphony and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition in Ravel’s famous orchestration. Directly before the recording sessions, a concert featuring both works prompted this response from ResMusica: “Philippe Jordan, known for his precision in interpreting a score, exhibited superb authority in a programme that showed off the orchestra to great effect and astonished the ear with its profusion of colours … Pictures at an Exhibition was marvellous from beginning to end.”

Here are sets of Pictures to suit almost every personal art gallery. The newest issue (though not the most recently recorded—it has a 1979 analogue source) is the least memorable. The orchestral playing is excellent and certain portrayals are striking, the ”Ballet of Unhatched Chicks”, for instance and ”Samuel Goldenberg and Schmuyle”, while the closing sequence is strongly projected.

This hybrid SACD contains stereo and 4.0 multi-channel audio and I think it's fantastic!
For this album TOMITA created some of the most unusual, high quality electronic sounds ever heard. Then he used these sounds very effectively in some amazing orchestrations. The listening is as enjoyable as it is bizarre, quite an accomplishment in itself.
