While fans of The Dear Hunter have been waiting in anticipation for the prospective 'Act IV', Casey Crescenzo and the band sent something a little different our way, although equally as exciting; not one, but nine EPs released simultaneously. This project is called 'The Color Spectrum', and each of the EPs is a four song set that is meant to reflect whatever given mood each color evokes. It is granted that nine releases is a pretty difficult chunk to digest all at once, and especially considering that the EPs are currently only available on vinyl, it is a bit of an investment for someone that might only want for of a single album's experience. Luckily, The Dear Hunter did opt to release an album version of 'The Color Spectrum'; a selection of songs from each of the EPs that is meant to give a taste of what the project is all about…

Director Martin Scorsese's Hugo, adapted from the novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Brian Selznick, presents composer Howard Shore, working on his sixth Scorsese film, with distinct requirements that he fulfills ably. For this most lighthearted (and most Gallic) of Scorsese efforts, Shore appropriately suggests French moods everywhere. The basic way he achieves this is by using two different sets of musicians simultaneously on most cues. There is a full orchestra, to be sure, but it tends to occupy the background of the sound picture…

Husband and wife team violinist Thomas Zehetmair and violist Ruth Killius have divided their performing and recording careers between standard and contemporary repertoire. On this CD they tackle a diverse selection of 20th and 21st century repertoire for their instruments. Giacinto Scelsi's 1957 Manto for viola and female voice is in the three movements. The first two, for viola alone, betray little direction or focus and are relentlessly, gratingly dissonant. The third movement with voice is intriguing in its interweaving of the contrasting timbres and is altogether engaging.
