Florentine composer Castelnuovo‐Tedesco contributed a vast array of music to the guitar literature, and this engaging release celebrates his output for two guitars, drawing focus to what is perhaps the repertoire’s most awe‐inspiring collection: the cycle of 24 preludes and fugues known as Les guitares bien tempérées. The unique nature of this work lies in the composer’s great ability to use ‘raw’ materials, polishing them with an almost unparalleled skill to create small, perfect and autonomous scenes that draw on light and extremely effective use of counterpoint; appending them is the Fuga elegiaca, a work that functions as the perfect conclusion on account of its original key of G minor, the same key in which the series opens.

Her collaborator on this occasion is the Italian pianist Enrico Pace.

'Change of Pace' is Greyhounds' second - and finest - collection of funky, blues-and-R&B-laced rock and roll. Where their last album, 2014's acclaimed 'Accumulator,' focused on internal emotional turmoil and personal relationships, 'Change of Pace' draws its inspiration from the outside world and the struggles the duo sees every day in Texas and on the road. From the slow-burning anthem 'Walls,' to the lighter 'Late Night Slice,' to the deep wells of emotion that bubble up on the heartbroken 'Cuz I'm Here' and the funky 'For You,' the album showcases the remarkable artistic maturation the band has undergone in the short time since releasing 'Accumulator.' Derek Trucks raved that 'Greyhounds make real music, the right way and for the right reasons,' while JJ Grey described their songs as landing 'somewhere between a heartfelt hymn and the dirtiest jank you've ever heard in your life,' and Gary Clark Jr. summed it up simply as Greyhounds 'crushed it as usual.' The war is on for your mind, and 'Change of Pace' is without a doubt a win for the good guys.

Demand for piano duet material in the nineteenth century was such that the market expanded to an unparalleled extent. The preparation of an easily playable four-hand piano reduction was of critical importance to a work’s dissemination and Robert Schumann, himself a keen duet performer, wrote for the medium with enthusiasm. He arranged his Symphony No. 2 himself, aided by his wife Clara, expending considerable time and effort on the work. The overtures show the variety of arrangers involved, such as his brother-in-law Woldemar Bargiel and the organist Robert Pfretzschner, both of whom Schumann held in the highest regard.

Duo Ahlert & Schwab have dedicated themselves, through their choice of instruments, to one of the smallest repertoires to be found in the classical music pantheon, that for guitar and mandolin. On this Naxos' effort, Daniel Ahlert plays the mandolin, and Birgit Schwab takes Baroque guitar and archlute parts in works of Sylvius Leopold Weiss and Giovanni Hoffmann. Being German, they identify Giovanni Hoffmann under the wholly inauthentic name of "Johann Hoffmann," which can lead to some confusion.

Collections of encores are commonplace in the recording catalogs, but violinist Leonidas Kavakos comes up with something new here: a collection of showstoppers. With a couple of little Russian tunes from Stravinsky to ramp up, and Fritz Kreisler's arrangement of Dvorák's Humoresque in G flat major, Op. 101, No. 7, to wind things down, the rest is a nonstop cavalcade of extreme violin, with the various national traditions of the great virtuosos (Sarasate, Wieniawski) and composer showpieces (Richard Strauss and, unexpectedly, Benjamin Britten) providing variety.
