On "Heat", his second outing with Jazzland Recordings, Knut Reiersrud, Scandinavia's premier blues guitarist, is not only at the height of his powers, but is wilfully unleashing everything from his enviably substantial musical box of tricks. Progressive blues rubs shoulders with prog rock moments, train-track 6/8 rhythms jostle alongside atmospheric textures and evocative meditations; one moment there are exuberant Hammond chops and the next there are plaintive Fender Rhodes chordal chimes. Eastern influences inform beautiful slide guitar lines; melody and compositional excellence are pervasive, and as anyone familiar with Reiersrud or the members of his band will expect the solos are exquisite.

Secret Space Program, Sverre Knut Johansen’s second release on Spotted Peccary Music, focuses a distant lens on some of life’s strangest and possibly most impactful questions. Who are we? Where did we come from? Are we alone? Inspired by fantastic stories of extra-terrestrial intelligence, Johansen magnifies these inquiries, addressing them through a large array of synthesized instruments and soundscapes. The resulting electro-symphonic compositions unveil a deeply compelling musical experience. The album’s concept shimmers with the enthralling aura of a sci-fi story, flirting with conspiratorial questions reminiscent of The X-Files, as the “Secret Space Program” of Johansen’s musical tale investigates our involvement with non-terrestrial intelligence…

It's quite an achievement to become famous in one's lifetime, even to be hailed as a great master, yet the creators of Immortal Nystedt seem to have presented the esteemed Norwegian composer his eternal reward a bit prematurely. Knut Nystedt is indeed celebrated in his country, and he has been honored with a knighthood in the Order of St. Olav for his work, so some kudos are clearly in order. But if the a cappella choral music on this SACD by Øystein Fevang with Ensemble 96 and the Bærum Vokalensemble is representative of Nystedt's best work, then the praise is a little extravagant.

The duo album “Hummingbird” with Dobro player Knut Hem is now released in Norway. International release will be announced later. I’m very proud of this album! Dobro and piano is not the most common combination, but it sounds very nice. Mike Hartung at Propeller recordings have done a marvellous job recording it, and the C.Bechstein sounds brilliant too.

Donald Byrd was considered one of the finest hard bop trumpeters of the post-Clifford Brown era. He recorded prolifically as both a leader and sideman from the mid-'50s into the mid-'60s, most often for Blue Note, where he established a reputation as a solid stylist with a clean tone, clear articulation, and a knack for melodicism. Toward the end of the '60s, Byrd became fascinated with Miles Davis' move into fusion, and started recording his own forays into the field. In the early '70s, with the help of brothers Larry and Fonce Mizell, Byrd perfected a bright, breezy, commercially potent take on fusion that was distinct from Davis, incorporating tighter arrangements and more of a smooth soul influence. Opinions on this phase of Byrd's career diverge wildly jazz purists utterly despised it, branding Byrd a sellout and the records a betrayal of talent, but enraptured jazz-funk fans regard it as some of the most innovative, enduring work of its kind. In fact, proportionately speaking, Byrd was held in even higher esteem by that audience than by straight-ahead jazz fans who enjoyed his hard bop output.

A new recording of world premieres addressing a topic of our national discourse: diaspora. If There Were Water, from Philadelphias 2017 Grammy-nominated choir, The Crossing, is a testament to the expressive range of the human voice. These two strikingly diverse, yet equally compelling unaccompanied compositions were commissioned for The Crossings Month of Moderns festival and premiered in June 2017.
