Dave Koz is one of the most popular smooth jazz artists in the world and his Christmas albums are unparalleled. For his 2017 addition to his oeuvre of Holiday hits, he revisits some of the songs on his first Christmas album 'December Makes Me Feel This Way'' exactly 20 years later. The album is Dave plus "Friends", this time the special guests include David Benoit, Rick Braun and Peter White. It's a formula that saw success with previous Summer Horns and Christmas albums. Dave has continually shown skill and showmanship and has proven that he can deliver what holiday music fans crave.

Since his self-titled 1990 smash debut, Dave Koz has been one of smooth jazz's greatest musicians. The saxman scored big on the radio and in retail even when he turned away from his established R&B/pop sound on 1996's Off the Beaten Path, which was done with more acoustic instruments. The Dance brings him back to the hard-hitting R&B funk sounds of that first album and its follow-up, 1993's Lucky Man. Aside from reuniting him with some of the producers who worked on his debut – Jeff Lorber, Carl Sturken, Evan Rogers, and his brother Jeff Koz – The Dance is a true testament to the art of collaboration…

Summer Horns is the first studio album from Dave Koz since 2010's Hello Tomorrow. That said, it's not solely billed to him. The "and Friends" on the bill refers to three other contemporary jazz saxophonists: Gerald Albright, Mindi Abair, and Richard Elliot. Produced by Paul Brown, this is a big up-front horn section record, full of jazz, funk, and R&B covers, alternately by Greg Adams, Tom Scott, Gordon Goodwin, and Albright. The four-sax line is augmented by brass in various places, too. While Brown's production sound stays within the genre of contemporary jazz – it's both clean and bright – the feel is all groove.

Concept discs tend to go one of two ways–they dance around a theme, causing listeners to draw their own conclusions about how well the album hangs together, or they come on strong. Sax man Dave Koz's At the Movies floats mellifluously into the second category. From the moment Judy Garland's voice comes keening through the crackle of "Over the Rainbow," we're transported directly into the cinema alongside Koz and a handful of high-wattage friends. Only in Koz's theater, the music is at times more heart-tuggingly pretty than we remember. "Moon River," from Breakfast at Tiffany's meanders gracefully before Barry Manilow surfaces to lend a languid, signature-smooth vocal.

Off the Beaten Path is truly unique and refreshing. Dave Koz goes far beyond what others have done in this genre by combining his trademark sax sound with acoustic guitar, accordion, mandolin, tambourine, and loads of other instruments not normally associated with jazz. Adding the fiddle and marching snare drums in Follow Me Home is an especially nice touch. For me, Dave's new CD The Dance was a major disappointment after hearing Off the Beaten Path. That CD does not have nearly the vibrancy heard here. Off The Beaten Path has become my favorite Dave Koz CD….which was a major feat…Lucky Man is still a must-have for any smooth jazz collection. My favorite cuts are: Don't Look Back, Wake Up Call, Follow Me Home, Flat Feet, Leave the Light On, Under the Spell of the Moon and My Back Porch.

Koz..percussionist-producer Escovedo, Obiedo, pianist Peter Horvath and bassist Raymond McKinley immediately cooked up MarcandDave, a greasy East Bay number in honor of the grooving duo who survived that freak accident with Amtrak. It s got a little bit of a Tower feel, says Escovedo, who produced the concert and this VW All-Stars record to aid his badly injured friend, with whom he s played for 30 years. …In addition to a new bossa nova version of Heaven, a tune he wrote for a Sheila E. record featuring van Wageningen, Escovedo composed this record s closer, the gospel-like ballad Wherever You Go I ll Go. It speaks about God and the struggles we have at times, says Escovedo, who included a track on the album that features van Wageningen (Oakland in Da House, from an earlier live Sheila E. recording). The bassist, he reports, is in good spirits and itching to play again. He s starting to sit down and hold his bass a little bit. He s inching his way back to health.
