Darren Shan, "The Thin Executioner"
Publisher: Little | ISBN: 0316078654 | edition 2010 | PDF | 382 pages | 1,22 mb

Though its basis on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn provides a potential inroad for educators, the nonstop action and violence make Shan’s latest best suited for reading with no strings attached. It is the saga of young Jebel Rum, the weakest son of the best executioner in the land of Wadi. When Jebel is publicly shamed, he embarks upon a quest to mythical Tubaygat, where legend holds he will be granted invincibility if he makes it through alive and sacrifices a slave.

Darren Smith Band - Keep The Spirit Alive
MP3 320 Kbps | Size: 104.8 Mb | Playing Time: 00:46:43
Genre: Hard Rock | 13 Tracks

The Darren Smith Band's "Keep the Spirit Alive" is meant to do just as the title says, keep the rock n' roll spirit alive and kicking. The album is stuffed to the brim with songs that focus themselves on the lighter side of life, good times, love trysts and good ol rock n roll. There's also a bitter little piece in here too but it doesn't darken the overall brighter picture. With Harem Scarem's ex-drummer turned frontman and band leader, ,he puts on a surprising show of song penning competency and a grittier take on the Harry Hess vocal sound. Maybe a little Paul Stanley flavor is thrown in here and there. His vocal prowess should not come as a shock, afterall he crooned the lead vocals on "Sentimental BLVD" on Harem Scarem's "Mood Swings" album, which was superb.

Fred Frith & Darren Johnston - Everybody’s Somebody’s Nobody (2016)

Fred Frith & Darren Johnston - Everybody’s Somebody’s Nobody (2016)
MP3 320 kbps CBR | 45:42 min | 110 MB
Genre: Jazz | Label: Clean Feed

This is the first duo effort to be released by Canada-born, but long time contributor to the San Francisco Bay Area scene trumpeter Darren Johnston, and the legendary guitar iconoclast Fred Frith. They can also be heard together on the fine release “Reasons For Moving,” (Not Two, 2007), alongside Larry Ochs, Devin Hoff and Ches Smith, but in this more intimate musical gathering, the results are truly astonishing. The genesis for this session was originally to provide sounds for a short dance film for filmmakers John Haptas and Kristine Samuelson and choreographer Amy Seiwert in a commission for the SF Dance Film Festival, but as can happen when improvisors are effectively inspired by one another, this led to a full release’s worth of exciting new music.

James Darren - This One's From The Heart (1999)

During a career that's stretched for more than 40 years, James Darren has touched many of the bases in the entertainment game. He started in the 1950s when he was a teenage idol of the big screen, and then moved on to appearances on any number of TV shows over the ensuing years. One of the more notable of these appearances was his portrayal of a swinging 1960s Rat Pack crooner on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This wasn't one of those too-often-seen instances of miscasting: The man can sing, and this, his latest album, is telling evidence of his gift. Coincidentally, ironically, or whatever, Darren comes across a bit like another singer who began his career in the 1950s: the similarly surnamed Bobby Darin. And like his near namesake, Darren suffers from unfair and unnecessary comparisons to Frank Sinatra. It probably doesn't help matters that several songs on the album are strongly associated with Sinatra, including "All the Way," "Come Fly With Me," "Night and Day," and "I've Got You Under My Skin." If any singer with a style like Darren's were forced to limit his selections to songs not already done by Sinatra, the vocal pickings would be slim indeed. Darren has something to say with each of these tunes, and he says it well.
