Uganda's dictator, General Idi Amin Dada, accepts a foreign crew's request to interview and film him. He talks to the camera about his outreach to Arab nations, his goal of eradicating Israel, his views on economic policy, and his views of Nixon, Kissinger, and other world leaders. We also see him dressing down his ministers at a cabinet meeting (two weeks after this meeting, the foreign minister, whom Amin criticizes here, is murdered), supervising a war-game simulation of an invasion of Israel, visiting a village, and addressing a conclave of Ugandan physicians.

The Dada art movement rejected logic and reason, and instead embraced nonsense, irrationality, and disharmony. While the movement did not stand the test of time, Dada's legacy lives on in literature, visual arts, and graphic design. In this installment of Type Project, Nigel French shows you how to resurrect this "anti-art" style and build a Dada-esque typography treatment. As with the other courses in the series, he shows you how to choose fonts and color palettes appropriate to the time period and how to use Photoshop and Illustrator to recreate the style for a modern age. These techniques include simulating imperfect baselines, creating an overprint effect, and adding texture.

Dada was an art movement that sprang up in Zurich Switzerland roughly around 1916. It emerged largely in response to the atrocities and insanity of World War 1, and sought to find and experiment with new forms of expression in an attempt to rejuvenate the creative act. After the end of the war in 1918, Dada spread to Germany (Berlin, Cologne, Hanover), where it was to rebel against the increasingly militaristic and nationalistic policies of the emerging far right as typified by the eventual rise to power of Hitler's Nazi party. Dada was important in an Art historical context in that it paved the way and laid the foundations for surrealism which was to follow. Many of the artists active in dada later becoming influential and active within surrealism. Although Dada groups existed in several forms for longer and shorter periods in other areas such in Paris, Italy, the Netherlands and New York. It's spiritual and historical home has always been in Zurich (Switzerland), with a special mention going to post world war 1 Germany. It is for this reason that this website will largely concentrate on these two areas of the Dada movement.
