The latest in MDG's fine series of live recordings by Stefan Blunier and the Beethoven Orchestra of Bonn is an intelligently chosen programme of three of Respighi's orchestral works that illustrate the many and varied aspects of this master orchestrator's compositions as well as his homage to music of the past. It is also pleasing to see two of the works making their first appearance on SACD…

"The years spent by Robert Schumann and his Clara in Dresden were a time of perfect happiness, and in 1849 the composer, like a teenager, presented his dearest with a Romanze pervaded by intense passion. An outstanding recording of Schumann’s complete works for violoncello and piano from this time transports us up to the couple’s seventh heaven. The Schumann specialist Aya Ishihara plays Clara’s role at a Steinway grand piano (1901), and her experienced duo partner Klaus Storck is heard as the emotionally profound cellist playing an Italian “Spiritus Sorsana” cello (made in 1730 in Cunei)…"

Krenek’s Karl V is the kind of opera that can be appreciated on several different levels. (…) Remarkably, it’s the earliest large-scale opera to use the 12-note system, though Krenek triumphantly refutes the notion that adherence to this technique inhibits creativity and emotional power. The composer’s widow has claimed that this performance, recorded in connection with the Beethoven Festival in Bonn last year, is by far the finest she has ever heard. With wonderful singing from David Pittman-Jennings as Karl and superb commitment from conductor Marc Soustrot and his fine orchestra, there is little reason to disagree with this verdict.

…I already indicated the excellent qualities of the soloists especially Franziska Hirzel and Birgit Remmert who sing with that important ethereal intensity. Kofman conducts with the ideal tonic and lets the music move along quite magically. The SACD sound comes out trumps on my Sony SACD-11 player and I really have nothing but an unqualified recommendation for this beautiful set.

The Ensemble Villa Musica (EVM) is a chamber group that has garnered much praise for its spirited performances in varied repertory since its founding in 1990. The number of players in the ensemble can vary according to the work performed, typically expanding from a duo to a quintet or all the way to a nonet, though the number of ensemble members is nearly 20 and can thus accommodate larger works. The group's repertory is broad, encompassing compositions by J.S. Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Fauré, Saint-Saëns, Hindemith, Martinu, as well as contemporary composers such as Penderecki and Hans Werner Henze. The ensemble has recorded for the German label MDG and for Naxos….
