Calcium intake is an important factor in bone health and may play some role in the prevention of colon cancer. Robert Barefoot has embellished these simple facts to create an elaborate scheme to promote his publications and coral calcium products. The book is filled with preposterous claims. On page 142, for example, he states: "The body can cure itself of all disease if given the nutrients it needs." I wish that things were so simple. Although nutritional strategies can help prevent and manage some diseases (most notably cardiovascular diseases), they are rarely curative. Moreover, the vast majority of diseases have little or nothing to do with nutrient levels. The book fails to note that coral calcium products (some of which carry Barefoot's name on their label) cost about ten times as much as the combination of calcium carbonate plus a multivitamin that is much better formulated.

Montreal mother and daughter, who have always shared a passion for music, take their partnership to the next level with a new album. Dreamers is a delight. The globe-trotting, stylistically voracious collection of duets is a tribute to the pair’s varied influences, from the breezy Quantas Voltas Dá Meu Mundo, by Brazil’s Djavan; to the mischievously twisted Somebody, by late American jazz saxophonist Steve Lacy; Valser en mi Bémol, by Quebec’s Catherine Major; classical great Benjamin Britten’s Corpus Christi; and Turkish treat Ben Seni Sevdugumi, by the late Kazim Koyuncu.

Performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Yuzo Toyama with soprano Rie Hamada. A beautiful digital recording of several rarely performed works by Takemitsu (the soprano part of the marvelous "Coral Island" is very difficult, for example, and the "Archipelago S" is for an unusual ensemble of instruments). Many of the subtleties of Takemitsu's writing are lost in recording (for example, subtle harmonics behind more foreground material), but the engineers made a good effort here.
