Dan Nimmer is an American jazz pianist and composer. "Modern Day Blues", his fourth album for Venus Records, is another winning trio date, this time with his contemporary band mates – bassist David Wong and drummer Pete Van Nostrand. The program has a few standards, but the bulk of it consists of attractive compositions by jazz musicians, including cool gems like "Out of the Past" by Benny Golson, "Le Coiffeur" by Dexter Gordon and "Uh Huh" by Hank Mobley. Nimmer closes the program with his "Modern-Day Blues", a powerful modal blues and definitely a highlight of this satisfying release. Recommended to fans of straight-ahead piano trio music.

Super-heavy original blues rock from Canada. This ain't your Gramma's blues band. Guitarist/vocalist Jeffrey David, JD, is well known for fronting the Canadian power-metal group Wicked Angel throughout the eighties and nineties. Wicked Angel toured and recorded extensively for over a decade, while JD was also involved in various blues oriented side-projects. However, it wasn't until 2008 that he devoted his skills full-time to this, his hard blues-rock project, including the role as sole writer for the group. Fresh, unique and one-of-a-kind are just a few words to describe his new power-trio. Heavy enough to hit a home-run with hard rock & metal fans, yet deep enough to cut like a knife, and his power-house rhythm section provides the heavy Blues Connection.

His Japanese fans reverently dubbed Fenton Robinson "the mellow blues genius" because of his ultra-smooth vocals and jazz-inflected guitar work. But beneath the obvious subtlety resides a spark of constant regeneration – Robinson tirelessly strives to invent something fresh and vital whenever he's near a bandstand. The soft-spoken Mississippi native got his career going in Memphis, where he'd moved at age 16. First, Rosco Gordon used him on a 1956 session for Duke that produced "Keep on Doggin'." The next year, Fenton made his own debut as a leader for the Bihari Brothers' Meteor label with his first reading of "Tennessee Woman." His band, the Dukes, included mentor Charles McGowan on guitar. T-Bone Walker and B.B. King were Robinson's idols.

This is not the vintage Don Covay sound that many of his fans may know about and you won't find any of his big hits on this CD but this 1969 album sounds like a labor of love, something that Covay was dying to record for a long, long time. You can hear the sincerity, vitality and enthusiasm on every track. Wonderful album. As other reviewers have noted. this is a bit of a hybrid. Not a traditional blues album by any means, but one that mixed blues with soul and a dash of rock too. Very satisfying results. There are times when Covay is singing, that I swear it's Mick Jagger. The vocal inflections are that similar sometimes. But the real highlights are the songs themselves, plus the guitar playing. Something to savor.

In April 2016, Black Stone Cherry released “Kentucky”, to great critical and commercial success. Kentucky reached new chart peaks for the band worldwide, and was followed by massive touring through the United States, Europe and Australia. In the midst of this all, the band found the time and dedication to record “Black to Blues”. The EP „Black To Blues“ features six blues-classics originally written and/or performed by legendary musicians like Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Booker T. Jones, Albert King and Freddy King. On “Black to Blues”, these traditional songs get wildly Black Stone Cherry-fied, while also paying homage to the original on the other hand.

Nothing makes author Peg Gould smile like seeing Duke, her iron hulk of a dog, bound into the enclosed fields of the dog park near home with true hound-dog swagger, tail held high and wagging wildly. His velvety black hair and droopy jowls often are noticed and appreciated by onlookers as though they were sighting Elvis himself.
