Otis Redding says these words just before launching into “Respect” on April 8, 1966, wrapping up the first of seven sets he’d play over the course of three days at Los Angeles’ Whisky A Go Go. A few songs earlier, he first informed the crowd that they were recording the concert with plans of releasing it as an album, playing the newly-written “Good to Me” for the second time in nine songs simply because it was the single and they needed to get it right. For his ’66 stint at the Whisky A Go Go, he was backed by his road band, the Otis Redding Revue a ten-piece group similar to the bands who supported him whenever he toured the south. This is the residency that is captured in its entirety on Stax’s six-disc box Live at the Whisky A Go Go: the Complete Recordings.

Although Sergei Rachmaninov considered himself first and foremost a composer, the last two decades of his life found him knee-deep in his “second career” as a touring concert pianist and recording artist. In 1992, RCA Gold Seal brought out all of Rachmaninov’s recorded performances in a 10-disc set, now reprinted as a space-saving budget box.

Argerich shows us what Chopin is all about. She demonstrates how this composer, along with his many other features, continually twisted the dials of music’s air-conditioning system, overwhelming cool melodic solitude with surges of warmth and intermingling cold wellsprings with hot flashes. Despite all the pathos it is sometimes made to bear, the emotionalism of Chopin’s music is always humanly ennobled. This is what makes it so eloquent in Argerich’s readings, so visceral, so powerful in its impact. The linguistic force of his music is unmistakably valid beyond the boundaries of nations and continents. That is why there are so many excellent Chopin players on this earth, but only one Martha Argerich.

Although pianist Hank Jones gets first billing on this two-disc set from Lone Hill Jazz, it actually contains three complete Tyree Glenn-led sessions that were originally released on LP by Roulette Records as At the Embers, At the Roundtable and At the London House in 1957, 1958 and 1961. Featuring Glenn on trombone and vibraphone running through swing and bop standards backed by a world-class rhythm section of Jones, Milt Hinton and Jo Jones, Quintet/Sextet Complete Recordings makes a fine introduction to an often over-looked and completely professional jazz player.

In the early 70's a band named Catalyst was formed in the heart of Philadelphia. The core of the group was Odean Pope, Sherman Ferguson, Eddie Green and Al Johnson (who was replaced by Tyrone Brown after their first album). The band drew from a wide range of musical styles; jazz, funk, R&B, avant garde and fusion all found their way into the creative sonic tapestry of Catalyst. With the given talents of Catalyst they could have and should have been bigger but sadly they found themselves with little promotion or recognition outside the proximity of Philadelphia. Thankfully Catalyst were able to leave behind four extraordinary recordings that will appeal to both jazz heads and those in the hip hop community.
