In the course of his illustrious career, the Soviet composer Sergei Prokoﬁev wrote seven symphonies. The ﬁrst of these, the Classical Symphony, dates from 1917, and the last from 1951. As for the Second and the Third, they were written in 1924 and 1928 respectively. Both were composed in Paris, at the time ofcultural effervescence that was 'the roaring twenties'. The musician's intention at the time was to become a French citizen.
