After three and a half years of sweat, pain, tears and love – and even a little bit of blood – Colorado singer/songwriter Lara Ruggles is releasing her debut full-length album, Cynics & Saints, on Immersive Records. Proof that good things come to those who wait, Cynics & Saints’ powerful vocals, lyrics as metaphorical as they are personal, and guitar-and-piano driven melodies take the listener on a journey that looks fearlessly into what it means to be willing to be broken; a reflection of the album’s creation. Lara Ruggles is well known among audiophiles. Her song "Snowflake" in DSD format was one of only 4 High Resolution tracks chosen to be pre-installed on every Sony Hi-Res Walkman sold around the world. The track was also featured on a sampler for Sony AR-1 speakers and will soon be included on a sampler by PS Audio!

While visiting Paris in 1908, upper class Lord Burnstead loses his butler playing poker. Egbert and Effie Floud bring Ruggles back to Red Gap, Washington. Effie wants to take advantage of Ruggles' upper class background to influence Egbert's hick lifestyle. However, Egbert is more interested in partying and he takes Ruggles to the local 'beer bust'. When word gets out that "Colonel Ruggles is staying with his close friends" in the local paper, the butler becomes a town celebrity. After befriending Mrs. Judson, a widow who he impresses with his culinary skills, Ruggles decides to strike out on his own and open a restaurant. His transition from servant to independent man will depend on its success.

Karan Casey sings for Solas, one of the hottest young Irish folk bands of the last five years. Her solo debut is a wonderful album, a program consisting primarily of traditional material presented with minimal arrangements that show off her crystalline voice to best advantage. The instrumentation is not always strictly traditional – that's an electric guitar providing cloudlike washes of chordal harmony on "She Is Like the Swallow" – but the overall feel is very much in the folk idiom. Despite the intrinsic lightness of her voice, Casey manages to deliver a blistering rendition of Ewan MacColl's acerbic "Ballad of Accounting," and she sings about the jilted "Roger the Miller" with deceptive sweetness. She also brings new energy and insight into such chestnuts as "Shamrock Shore" and "One, I Love." Her excellent backing musicians include members of Solas, notably flutist Seamus Egan, who also provides excellent production.

The intricate, heart-felt country-blues pickin’ and genuine musical camaraderie embedded in this album makes it one of those rare ‘white boy blues’ albums that actually works from the music to the mixing to the mind-blowing, unforgettable lyrics. Late Bloomer is a surprising about-face from his last, all-instrumental release Say No More. “With Casey playing mandolin, harmonica, National steel, lap steel and other guitars, Say No More suggests a slide-happy, Southern-fried Leo Kottke gone ambient.” In a car, or, better yet, a Greyhound, Say No More does for passing scenery what Ry Cooder did for Paris, Texas.

Casey Neill & The Norway Rats perform rock music informed by post punk ethos, combining haunting dirges and diesel fueled rave-ups. Neill's original weather-beaten narratives eschew irony in favor of romance, celebrate society's miscreants, and explore the hidden corners of the American landscape. The Norway Rats, a crack gang of Portland musos, perform Neill's originals with unhinged live energy. With accordions, over-driven guitars, and Neill's raspy voice, the band blends elements of Scots/Irish tunefulness, feral abandon, and heartland rock.
