In April 1969 Billboard announced that RCA had signed a 'progressive blues-rock band called The Deirdre Wilson Tabac This was a misleading description of the group, who in fact played a funky brand of jazzy pop, akin to the Rotary Connection. From Philadelphia, they were in fact a trio discovered, managed and produced by Sonny Casella, who'd earlier managed garage band The Magic Mushrooms.

Of the major '60s soul stars, Wilson Pickett was one of the roughest and sweatiest, working up some of the decade's hottest dancefloor grooves on hits. Although he tends to be held in somewhat lower esteem than more versatile talents like Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin, he is often a preferred alternative of fans who like their soul on the rawer side. He also did a good deal to establish the sound of Southern soul with his early hits, which were often written and recorded with the cream of the session musicians in Memphis and Muscle Shoals.

The exploration by John Wilson of Coplands major orchestral output with the BBC Philharmonic has now reached Volume 3, with this invigorating programme recorded in surround-sound. It opens with An Outdoor Overture, a cheerful and breezy piece which Copland composed in 1938, intending to spearhead an initiative encouraging American Music for American Youth. Originally written for organ and orchestra, the First Symphony is presented here in its revised version (1926-28) for large orchestra.

Reuben Wilson's 30-year musical influence on the modern music scene is readily apparent on Down With It, released in 1998 on the ultra-funky Cannonball label. Wilson's legendary status is well-deserved. Revered around the world as one of the pioneers of the Hammond B3 organ sound, the "godfather of funk and soul-jazz" continues to transplant his groove into the acid jazz movement. Unlike the previously released Organ Donor, Wilson does not revisit his classics "Hot Rod" and "Got to Get Your Own," but has written four new tunes on the set, including "One 2 Four," which reunites him with soul-jazz guitar pioneer Melvin Sparks.

Al Wilson gets unfairly tagged as a "one hit wonder" due to his huge hit, the brilliant "Show and Tell." But as this "Best Of" compilation demonstrates, he had a bag full of other good songs too, all of which mined a delicious soulful groove. Of course this set includes "Show and Tell" but it also has "La La Peace Song" which was actually a minor hit the same year. Other highlights include "Willoughby Brook Road," "Magic of Your Mind" and some interesting interprations of classics like "I Won't Last a Day Without You" and "Born on the Bayou." One reviewer complained that this was not a true "best of" Al Wilson collection because it doesn't contain his acclaimed late 60s and early 70s material.
