The classic '60s/early 70s soul instrumental sound from the classic '60s/early 70s soul instrumental band featuring Booker T Jones on the keyboards, Steve 'The Colonel' Cropper on guitar, Duck Dunn on bass and, one of the greatest of all soul drummers, Al Jackson on the skins. Cropper and Dunn went on to fame again with the Blues Brothers movie, albums and touring band of the same name. Al Jackson died far too soon. Melting Pot is a return of the 1971 set they cut for Stax and adds to the legacy of fine albums once again in catalogue.

The impossibly tight house band for the Stax/Volt labels, The MG's defined, more than any other factor, the economical and groove-heavy sound of Memphis soul. Backing such legends as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, and Wilson Pickett, they performed on over 600 recordings. They were, of course, also a legendary instrumental recording unit in their own right. This double-disc, 30-track collection includes such classics as "Green Onions," "Time Is Tight," and "Hip Hug-Her."

McLemore Avenue is a 1970 album by Booker T. & the M.G.s, consisting entirely of mostly instrumental covers of songs from the Beatles' album Abbey Road (released only months earlier, in September 1969). The title and cover are an homage to the Beatles album, 926 East McLemore Avenue being the address of the Stax studio in Memphis, as Abbey Road was for EMI in London.
Booker T. Jones said, "I was in California when I heard Abbey Road, and I thought it was incredibly courageous of The Beatles to drop their format and move out musically like they did. To push the limit like that and reinvent themselves when they had no need to do that. They were the top band in the world but they still reinvented themselves. The music was just incredible so I felt I needed to pay tribute to it."

"It was during my eighth or ninth plant medicine journey that I was finally getting a real sense of freedom. I was feeling so elated that I told the moon I had a special request. I explained that this life had been so full of pain for me that I didn't think I could do it all again. So I asked her if in my next life she could make sure that I found the plant medicine as soon as possible. Her reply floored me. She typed, 'Gerry, that's a request about next time, but it's the same one you used last time.'"

Recorded in Munich, Germany, in 1965, the three tracks that make up The Trance come from the same session that produced the invigorating Booker Ervin/Dexter Gordon tenor battles, Settin' the Pace. These remaining tracks feature Ervin's sole tenor on two of his compositions, the blues "Groovin at the Jamboree" and the haunting 19-minute title track, dedicated to the late bassist George Tucker. Also included is the standard "Speak Low," also clocking in at 19 minutes. Admittedly, tracks that long can get tiresome quickly in the wrong hands. Fortunately, Ervin's inspired exploratory tenor flights are consistently stirring, punctuated with piercing blues…
