Learn the foundations of figure drawing: techniques for bringing the human form to life on paper. Artist and teacher Amy Wynne breaks down a classical approach to figure drawing into simple steps: capturing gesture and motion, mapping out structure and form, understanding the common "landmarks" of the body, drawing proportionally, and adding volume with shapes and shadows. Filmed on premise in a professional art studio, this course shows how to work with live models and different drawing materials. It's ideal for beginners who are just learning to draw the human figure as well as experienced artists who want to brush up their drawing skills. Follow along with Amy's tutorials and then use the worksheets and sample poses in the exercise files to practice figure drawing in your own time.

Amending the Abject Body: Aesthetic Makeovers in Medicine and Culture

Amending the Abject Body: Aesthetic Makeovers in Medicine and Culture (SUNY series in Feminist Criticism and Theory) by Deborah Caslav Covino
English | Oct. 28, 2004 | ISBN: 0791462323 | 163 Pages | PDF | 1 MB

Examines the implications and meanings of the makeover and aesthetic surgery industry in American popular culture.
Feminist theorists have often argued that aesthetic surgeries and body makeovers dehumanize and disempower women patients, whose efforts at self-improvement lead to their objectification. Amending the Abject Body proposes that although objectification is an important element in this phenomenon, the explosive growth of "makeover culture" can be understood as a process of both abjection (ridding ourselves of the unwanted) and identification (joining the community of what Julia Kristeva calls "clean and proper bodies"). Drawing from the advertisement and advocacy of body makeovers on television, in aesthetic surgery trade books, and in the print and Web-based marketing of face lifts, tummy tucks, and Botox injections, Deborah Caslav Covino articulates the relationship among objectification, abjection, and identification, and offers a fuller understanding of contemporary beauty-desire.

Many of us drew dinosaurs when we were kids. Dinosaurs are beasts of paradox. They inhabited the world between monster and animal, imagination and science. For many, dinosaurs were the introduction to understanding the natural world. It is not surprising that many of the world’s leading paleontologists started out as artists themselves. In this DVD, David conveys a strong understanding of dinosaur anatomy mixed with the sheer joy of giving life, personality and motion to these inspiring creatures. He covers a wide range of topics from skeletal structures and muscles, to range of motion and the essential gestures of various body types. David focuses on capturing these elements in the form of quick sketches of both herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs.

Body Matters: A Phenomenology of Sickness, Disease, and Illness

Body Matters: A Phenomenology of Sickness, Disease, and Illness by James Aho
Lexington Books; 1 edition | April 16, 2009 | English | ISBN: 0739126997 | 206 pages | PDF | 2 MB

Following the core principle of phenomenology as a return 'to the things themselves,' Body Matters attends to the phenomena of bodily afflictions and examines them from three different standpoints: from society in general that interprets them as 'sicknesses,' from the medical professions that interpret them as 'diseases,' and from the patients themselves who interpret them as 'illnesses.' By drawing on a crucial distinction in German phenomenology between two senses of the body_the quantifiable, material body (Ksrper) and the lived-body(Leib)_the authors explore the ways in which sickness, disease, and illness are socially and historically experienced and constructed.
