Rock / Contemporary Rock / Classic Rock / Songwriter

It's been 20 years since David Crosby released a collection of new songs, but he's hardly been quiet in those two decades. His occasional reunions with Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and sometimes Neil Young get the most attention, but he also appeared on David Gilmour's 2006 album On an Island and, more notably, often worked with his son James Raymond on a band called CPR. Raymond is David's chief collaborator on Croz, a skillful evocation of Crosby's early-'70s haze as filtered through early-'90s professionalism. As always, Crosby is supported by a cast of heavy-hitters, but where 1993's A Thousand Roads sometimes seemed weighed down by cameos (an emphasis on covers also helped shift the spotlight away from the man at the center), Croz is tastefully decorated with sly solos by Mark Knopfler and Wynton Marsalis, the focus forever remaining on Croz himself.

Jazz / Post Bop / Drums

The addition of Bobby McFerrin to drummer Jack DeJohnette's group should have been a definite plus; the singer can do so much with his voice, from substituting for a string bass to using his falsetto like a horn. This program of mostly originals, however, not only lacks more than one or two strong melodies, but also fails to have real development, particularly on the selections that include McFerrin. Performances often start in what could just as well be the middle and end inconclusively, with many of the pieces being little more than funky riffs for the rhythm section. Despite a few strong moments (mostly from pianist Michael Cain), only "Seventh D" and "Summertime" (both instrumentals) are worth hearing a second time.

Jazz / Hard Bop / Saxophone

This CD only has one fault, but it is a major one. It seems that no matter what he plays (whether it be an obscure song by Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, or Antonio Carlos Jobim, or one of his two originals), Javon Jackson sounds too close to comfort to Joe Henderson; in fact there are times when the tenor-saxophonist sounds identical.

Two words: Five stars.
The Crosby-Nash subset of CSNY carried with it much of the charm and harmony of the larger group, and together and apart the two singers mined that appeal for several gold albums, especially in the first couple of years after the breakup of CSNY in 1970.

From beginning to end, Bangin' 'N' Knockin' reads like a tribute to one of Big In Iowa's seminal influences, Neil Young; or perhaps Crazy Horse would be a more exact template. The album opens with the helpless, Young-themed plea "Neil's on the Radio," and ends with the band's cover of his 1969 classic "Cinnamon Girl," recorded for the Inbetween Records Neil Young tribute album Another Note for You. Bob Burns still sounds like Van Morrison down to the warble emanating from his scarred and broken soul, and the band still provides a pummeling instrumental backing…

Miles Davis Kind Of Blue. Classic Records Reissue of Columbia CS 8163

Kind of Blue is one of my favorite albums. I'm fortunate enough to own a nice mono 6-Eye (CL 8163), as well as two stereo 6-Eyes, not particularly early pressings, but 6-Eyes nonetheless. So why would I even want a reissue copy? Classic went the extra Miles on this one by including a second disc in this set. I also haven't gotten any of the more recent Classic reissues, and I wanted to see what kind of job they did in their Columbia Jazz series.
